Well, I have since opened up the PSP and have found the words TA-088

Since it will not take any of the MMSs I can assume that it is of the v3 variety

WHile open I looked at the UMD drive and all the connectors seemed OK. When I turned it on for the first time without a memory stick the search button on the bottom right turned on for about half a second and then never returned. When I installed a UMD it did nothing. It never attempted to read it. Does anybody know if this would be a problem with the PSP circuit board or a problem with the UMD drive? Thanks.
