But isn't the fact that they took a minor character and made an entire game out of his part in the FF story enough to warrant him a place?

Well even though he got Crisis Core, Zack was not a big character in FF7, and that is what the characters are coming from. Also from the pattern we have seen it will be Sephiroth and Cloud from FF7. I am willing to bet though that there could be come unlockable skin for Cloud which will make him Zack.

So, it's a fighting game I doubt their personality is going to effect their fighting abilities.

Their attacks are basically the same, they look the same, I mean it would so easy for Square-Enix to just get the voice actor for Zack from CC to do a few lines then just make Zack's face and put it on Cloud's body and make Cloud's hair black.

Zak vs Cloud, Cloud vs Sephiroth, Zak vs Sephiroth, Zak should be in Dissidia.
it doesnt matter.
no one played FF7 and fell in love with Zak, Cloud was the protagonist.
Zak was part of Clouds story, and thats the only reason he is in the game.
they made FF:CC because stupid FF7 fanboys think they are unique by asking about minor characters and making a big deal of it.
if Zak was never mentioned in FF7 how would it change?
Cloud would still be Cloud, and every other character would still be themselves.
the only part of the story that would change is how it began with Zak saving Aeris or w/e and Could thinking that it was really him who did it.
nothing else.
and like everyone else said, its a button masher, not an rpg.
basically teken with FF characters.
