Game Compression
Hey guys, newish to the formums, but a lurker for the past few weeks
So Im messing with UMDGen and this other app PSP Iso for trying to compress down all my UMD games to fit on my 4gb ProDuo stick, I was just wondering if anyone knew any tips for getting max size reduction or what the real trade offs are to doing it.
Thanks for any help~ |

Well the reason Im asking is a friend got Dissidia down to 450 mbs, but the thing locked up when trying to buy Sephiroth, so Im wondering if he just did something wrong or if there is a realisitic way to get 1.6gb file down that low and still be playable. I have like 20+ UMDs and trying to figure out the best way to carry them around with me.
So far Ive seen PSP ISO Compressor v1.4 and UMDGen shrink files to about the same size respectively

Yeah like I just went and ran UMDGen and it cut Dissidia from 1.6gb to 1.3, so Im not fully understanding how people are making these files so small. |

its becuase they rip a shit load of files from the game(music, cutsince, ect) i would not do that. just use lvel 9 compression and get a photofast card with 2 16gb micro sd or 2 32mb micro sd and you would have them all

Thanks, yeah i just spoke with the friend who showed me the rip and told me about that exactly.
yeah, I really dont want to lessen the game by using lower quality movies and music, hell the music is half the enjoyability of the game!
Thanks for the help man~ |

Not only will load times be slower, but actual performance as well. You really don't want to go past, I don't know, 4 or 5?

I have when playing GTA:VCS. I've had to run the PSP @ 333MHz so that I don't have lag issues.

know this because it applies to every digital file type ever. COMPRESSION will HURT file performance. |

So far now I carry on my PSP
Dissida (cso)
Riveria (cso)
Yggrda Union (cso)
Final Fantasy Tactics WotL (cso)
Crisis Core (umd)
Still going through and ripping all my umds mainly just for safekeeping. Kinda bummed through that my PSP is having issues reading my copy of Valkyrie Profile. You guys wouldnt happen to know any ways of cleaning the disk for better read performance do you? |

The only files you can remove from a UMD and have it run as usual are UPDATE files for firmware, and some games will have padding files. I can't remember where they reside, but they're easy to spot, big files called PAD0, PAD1 etc. They can go. |
