Default Which Guide should I use?

I really don't want to brick my PSP when I try to mod it, so I'm trying to figure out which guide is for. Here is what I'll have/will have when I attempt the mod:

PSP phat/fat running official sony firmware (version 2.81)
USB data cable
PSP Battery Service Tool (to convert my normal battery into a temporary service battery).
A slim PSP (Not modded)
And last but not least, NO experience modding PSP's, so it's new to me (so a guide that's newb friendly would be great).

Which guide should I use to mod my PSP? A lot of guides I see mention at one point or another using a modded psp to do stuff, but I don't have access to a modded psp. And I'm assuming as long as I keep the MMS and the battery service tool, I can unbrick mine if I mess up (let me know if I'm wrong about that). Thanks for any help.

Edit: I forgot to ask which of the latest firmwares is the best, the 3.71 seems to be pretty popular, but I know there are newer versions and I read somewhere (don't know if it's true or not), but you could cycle through older firmwares if you had the 3.93.

Skip the battery mumbo-jumbo and use this guide - it will get you to 3.71 m33 from there it's easy to get to 3.90 m33-3. Let me know when your there.

Hmmm. Thank you very much for the help, but I don't see any link? I wonder if my anti-virus is blocking the link or something?
