Difference Between Different CFW's?

What really is the difference between the various cfws that are out there?
Don't they all serve one main purpose - to allow downloaded games to run on the PSP?

Also, i have the 3.73 ofw. I have to downgrade to a low version first, like 1.5, in order to download other cfws, correct?

The answer to your second question is yes, you do have to downgrade.
New custom firmware's allow your PSP to do more things. The 3.90 M33-3 custom firmware is the only custom firmware to allow your PSP to use Skype.
