Default Purchasing and modding a psp

O.k guys I am really sorry to post because I am sure you get so many of the same questions. This is a hard topic to search on because there is so much old stuff mixed with new. O.k basically I am looking to buy a psp off craigslist. I want a 1000 or 2000 so I can mod it. I would like the 2000 because I would enjoy video out and the faster web browsing. I mainly want movies, music, and emulators, such as snes, gba and maybe N64 but I read N64 doesn't work well. I would like to know if you guys have any advice as to what I should buy to make sure my psp is hackable. Also I am pretty sure you can hack a psp without ever taking apart or buying a battery. Do these instructions I found in another post look right

1. Update to 5.03 OFW. Done

2. Install ChickHEN, refer to the ChickHEN R2 readme that is bundled (I haven't used it so idk)

3. Extract the Recovery Flasher 1.60 .rar/.zip

4. Place the "RECOVERY" folder, in the X:/PSP/GAME folder of your mem stick.
X being the root.

5. Run ChickHEN by going to 'Photo' in the XMB, then 'ChickHEN', the the bottom picture. (If that fails, search the forums, theres a few theads on ChickHEN)

6. Once the device reboots, go to 'Game' then Recovery Flasher.

7. Once in the program, select install 5.00M33-6, wait for it to finish, then your done, you can delete ChickHEN, but keep Recovery Flasher just in case you semi brick your console.

Will this permanently install the best CFW on a 1000 or 2000. Are these the only things you need to do? Also anything else you think I should know about the difference in 1000 or 2000, or modding or anything please tell me.

Is there a way I can get the person to tell me which mobo they have, like some kind of system info thing. Also that mobo isn't available on any 1000 is it? Also is that the exact process I would go through to mod it?

ALL 1000 models are 100% hackable. You should only have to check the new 2000 series.

Would you guys recommend the 2000 over the 1000. Does the extra ram make that much of a difference in stuff like web browsing. I am interested in video out but I do not know if it is worth the trouble of locating and checking a 2000. I have also heard other good things about the 2000.

The extra RAM makes a difference if you're running the web browser under the HighMemoryMod homebrew. Without CFW they're both pretty much at the same level. I'd say find a 2000 that can be modded. Its worth the hassle.

Thanks for your help guys. It is good to know you can install cfw without ever opening a battery or spending more money. It actually sounds really easy.

There is a catch though with a PSP that has 5.50 or higher firmware (1000 or 2000, doesn't matter). Those PSP's will need a Pandora battery and a Magic Memory Stick to hack since ChickHEN only works with 5.03 FW. If you do not want to go through all of that (not that hard), then check the FW before you buy it. Good luck in your search, wish you the best.

Here's a great deal on a Pandora Battery if you need one:
DealExtreme: $6.32 PSP Unbricker Pandora Battery for PSP 1000/2000 (1800mAh/3.6V)
That's where I got mine, shipping takes a long time.

Default Purchasing and modding a psp

O.k so I am probably going to be looking at a couple of psps today. I need to be able to find out what motherboard they have. I should probably ask them before hand what OFW they have because I don't have time to mess with the 5.5 cause I need this hacked by next week, so I cant order a new battery in time. I will be meeting these guys in person. I think I should bring the OFW 5.03 update on a memory card in the correct location. I should also bring chickHEN and pspident, on a memory card with all of the necessary folders created. Then when we meet I update their psps to 5.03, run chickHEN, then pspident. So I am not sure if this will work. Can you update to OFW off of a memory stick, if so can you jump versions? Also can I make all the necessary folders without a psp and then just put it in any psp and expect it to work.

For OFW, you can jump versions, but only forward. You cannot install an earlier FW version than what is on that PSP at the time.

As for folders, it should work, just remember that all main folders are in CAPS. You do not need to have every single folder the PSP makes on the card, just the ones you will be using. Like PICTURE, that is the folder where images are stored.

This should be interesting because I only have one shot at this. If it doesn't work I can't fix it because I won't have a computer handy and this is like a one hour round trip.

Where do I put PSPident. Does it go in PSP/GAME or is there a subfolder I am missing? Also do I put the whole folder in there or just the eboot?

What I heard is you dont need PSPident. Just take off your battery cover and take outthe battery and look at your serial number. if it begins with "HU0" its hackable. Thats how I found out anyway :/
