well, from a present day perspective, both characters have overstayed their welcomes with lack luster sequels. both series need a serious reboot.
from the past, mario for sure. super mario 64 was golden, as was super mario bros 3. | |

Both were ruined going 2D > 3D in my opinion. I never liked the 3D versions of any game.

Definitely Mario... I've never been able to fully grasp a Sonic game...
BTW: Speaking of Sonic, when I am at certain convenience stores buying something from the cashier, I noticed that alot of the electronic computer-driven cash registers make sounds when the cashiers are pushing the buttons. I swear the sound that the register makes *IS* the sound from Sonic when he collects one of those gold rings. Anyone else notice this or am I just going a little nuts? I wish I could remember which stores I hear that at, but it's defineitely not just a single chain.

on topic, i grew up in a Nintendo family so it was Mario Bros 1/3 and Mario Land 1/2 for me. never got to play sonic til the 4th grade and by then mario was in my DNA, twisting my doods.
I agree with Julie when she states that both franchises have overstayed their welcome. Kind of like a certain Hulk of a giant in a certain entertainment community.
