Help with SNES and PSX LAG :(
Hi everyone, I have been a lurker here for a while but this is my first post. I recently upgraded form 1.5 to 3.02 then quickly to 3.03oe. I have been enjoying some PSX eboots like MGS and hot shots golf without a hitch, the same with some NES and genesis games. Last night I got some SNES games and Tony Hawk 1 for PSX. For some reason the SNES roms and tony hawk are lagging pretty bad. Especially mario kart, Donkey Kong country, and Tony Hawk. I tried Zelda and it was fine. I tried to play with some settings like cpu speed to 333 on the psp and on the emulator. I tried to do some frame skip, and it didnt help too much. Also changed the audio and it would work for a bit then freeze. Tony hawk is completely unplayable. Lags really really bad. Considering I can play MGS or silent hill without a problem, I dont see why Tony Hawk would give me any troubles. Can anyone give me some tips on what I can do to fix this? Tips or Tricks?
Thanks in advance!

Help with SNES and PSX LAG :(
I have had the same problem with my snes emulators and there is little that I know of that can be done. All that you can do is wait and hope that someone makes a good emu. As far as Tony Hawk is concerned I'm stumped, you could perhaps try a different CD or try ripping it again. Oh and if you want to play Mario Kart you can play it on the GBA emulator which runs perfectly. |

Help with SNES and PSX LAG :(
donkey kong and mario kart lag a little on the snes emu. im guessing it has something to do with the lighting on the games cause on DKC every time its a bright level i find that it lags pretty bad and on the dark levels it runs perfectly smooth, and mario kart i found just lagged constantly. So im guessing its just with those games, only ones i could find that lag on the emu.

from what ive noticed... it does lag at times, but i change the MHZ to 333, then maybe 1 frameskip, and sometimes change the engine hardware and its usually fine... some games that i dont care much for though i leave alone if they dont work... its one game out of the 600 i have that doesent play right.. big deal |

Tony Hawk runs slow because it's a watered-down Dreamcast port. As in, it was originally made FOR Dreamcast and they downsampled the sound and music and decreased the polycount for the PSX version. It's slow on the original PSX too.
As for the SNES emu, it's slow. It's so slow that you can't really games like Tales of Phantasia or Star Ocean (battle scenes = slideshow.) Games that use the FX chip, like StarFox, are even worse (all the time = slideshow.) There's nothing you can do about it.

P.S. What is the best SNES emulator? | I'm using SNES9xTYL 0.4.2me on 3.03 OE-C and it works great 99% of the time.

I tried that the other day and it actually worked pretty well. There was minimal lag and I don't think I tweaked the settings at all. |

If you want to run your games at speed on snes9xtyl you should set the cpu to 333 and your frame skip to auto. From here you can tweak your settings to get better fps but either way the game will at least run at real time (except some like Starfox). Lol - Mario RPG only runs at about 5fps. I haven't tried the GBA emu yet - but if that works perfectly then why is it so hard to get snes running perfectly? Hmmm... might have to do with the GBA having the very common ARM7 cpu. Ima play with the GBA emu right now b4 sleeping |

Mario World runs mint..... anyone wanting to play Donkey Kong Country, just get Dixie Kong. This one runs the smoothest of the three games. |

One of them is internal (inside the SNES) and is used for 2D resampling and special 2D effects. It's also used for MODE7 (the semi-3D effect used for stuff like the racetracks in F-ZERO.) This is the chip that games like Super Mario World and the Final Fantasy series use. It does things like allowing sharper higher-res sprites, MODE7 for the world map in games like Final Fantasy 3 and Illusion of Gaia, and also nice effects like the rotating screen in Super Castlevania. These games usually run pretty well unless they overload the emulator (Star Ocean, Tales of Phantasia are good examples, they make heavy use of the internal FX chip, especially in battles.)
The other chip is external (comes on the circuit board in each game that uses it) and is used for rendering of flat-shaded polygonal (3D) objects. This is the chip that games like StarFox use. It's harder to emulate this chip for two reasons: 1. It's 3D. 2. It's built-in to the carts that use it, making it harder to properly hack/reverse-engineer.
