Good news for all you socially connected (and hip) regulars of local retail establishments -- who have PS Vitas, of course. Sony's just announced that the free Foursquare app has officially landed at the PlayStation Store (US), and it can be yours for a paltry 4.5MBs of space on your precious proprietary memory card. The app works over WiFi, however, the fine print advises that users may want to use 3G for the best results to help alongside the Vita's GPS. Notably, the rear touchpad and cameras are listed as being compatible with the app, as well. We've poked around the app for a few minutes, and it does feel peppy compared to what we experienced with Facebook (while it was available, anyway) -- the only oddity that's arisen lies with the map functionality, which opens a Google Maps page within the Vita's browser rather than its Maps app. Now that we can watch Netflix over WiFi, and view our Flickr albums along with Tweeting and "Checking In" between our ModNation racing tours, how's about finally letting us get our Skype on? (P.S. We'd really like Facebook back in the store, too!)

Currently the PS Vita browser is nothing to brag about, no support for flash or HTML 5 video, and plus though the PS Vita is quad core, the browser performs similarly to a iPhone 4. However Sony reveal that improvements to the browser are coming. Via their Twitter account they said:

“Skype will be there soon, accompanied by improvements in web browser”.

No specifics were revealed, but hopefully it will improve stability and add a HTML5 video feature.

Sony PS Vita Sales reached over 1.2 Million

Sony launched the new PS Vita in North America and Europe last week. Today Sony said that the overall PS Vita sales have reached over 1.2 million...

Sony launched the new PS Vita in North America and Europe last week. Today Sony said that the overall PS Vita sales have reached over 1.2 million units. The PS Vita launched initially on December 17, 2011 in Japan followed by Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea. Sony says that the PS Vita sales exceeded expectations.

"PS Vita was designed to deliver the ultimate portable entertainment experience, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with the reaction we’re seeing from consumers and the pace at which PS Vita is selling," said Andrew House, President and Group CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.

"The market has responded and there is clear demand for a mobile device capable of providing a revolutionary combination of rich gaming and social connectivity within a real world context. To sustain momentum, we’re working closely with 3rd party developers and publishers to ensure the best games and franchises possible will be available on PS Vita, and our software line up for the remainder of 2012 will have something for everyone across the globe."

Sony has set their expectations pretty low for the PS Vita. I am surprised that they managed to sell over a million, but apparently there are 1 million hard-core Sony PlayStation fans out there.

I am pretty sure that the PS Vita will never reach mass market sales numbers. The smartphone has become for most people the portable game console of choice.

Hi All!

I posted a similar thread to staff members with reference to the PS Vita, however thought I would also 'appeal' to the users of the site also.

As you know we dont do a bad job on content & support for the PSP.

However to really help the site move forward we also need to capture the PS Vita market in the same way.

So I'm asking everyone to get involved in PS Vita discussion covering all types of topics from Posting Pics / Videos of you unboxing, talking about what it can do and what's coming to the platform, asking questions or starting debates such as 3G vs Wifi etc..

We will hopefully also follow the hacking / homebrew scene when it emerges although we will not link to anything that infringes upon copyright as usual ;)

Look forward to your posts!

Worried your PlayStation Vita is going to be so full of repurchased PSP content that you won't be be able to store it all? Yeah, neither are we -- but if you want another place to keep your Vita's picture, video, music and game content, Sony says your PC and PS3 will do nicely. An application page on the Japanese PlayStation website details a Vita app that lets users transfer data between the three platforms, noting that content can be purchased on the PC or PS3, and then transferred to the Vita for use later. Gamers looking to save scratch on that not-so-optional memory card will be able to use this content sharing feature to get the most out of whatever size storage they can afford. Sure, 4GB of storage the cheapest Vita memory card offers isn't ideal, but at least Sony is throwing you a bone to make it work.

Quick on the heels of yesterday's press release for Supremacy MMA, which indicated that PlayStation Vita is coming out this fall, news has emerged from the UK in the form of a flier, indicating that Vita might be coming out sooner than you think.

A reader sent us an advertisement from Blockbuster in UK, seen below, that dates both Vita models for European release on Friday, October 28th. The veracity of this ad is yet unknown -- definitely let us know in the comments if you think the ad is fake or not -- but we've reached out to Blockbuster in the UK for comment and confirmation. If the ad is indeed real, it's simply more evidence that Vita will be released in territories outside of Japan before 2011 ends.
