Default Newbie help

Hi
Total newbie here. so please be patient. I just recieved my first PSP. It has the original 1.5 firmware on it. From here, can I just upgrade directly to the 3.03oe-c? Can you still brick a PSP with the original 1.5 firmware? Any other tips or suggestions will be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance,

Dan
