Newbie in need of help
I've just got a second hand PSP fat of a friend. Running OFW 3.90. Would someone PLEASE explain how I can install CFW, simply so I can install some classic console emulators, and run games from ISO's. I don't actually understand how all this works. I don't have a spare battery, or anything like that. I've searched the internet extensively and noone will explain how to go from OFW to CFW, especially at 3.9. I'd be so greatful if someone could explain it all, and link everything I need. I've heard of this Pandora battery to force the console to boot to MS, on which you would put the cfw installation yes? however I only have one bat. and don't want to screw it up. Also, is all this safe? Someon explain, please
Cheers

If you want to upgrade from OFW 3.90 to CFW 3.90 M33-2, you will need Pandora's Battery along with the Magical Memory Stick. While making the latter mentioned item is relatively risk free, making Pandora's Battery with no prior soldering experience isn't recommended and can sometimes be considered hazardous. You're best bet is to search online and purchase an already made Pandora's Battery, preferably one that was made from an official Sony battery.
Once you have Pandora's Battery, there are several in depth guides in these forums that may help you extensively. Simply use the search button.

Does converting a battery always require soldering experience? I have a fat PSP. I thought you could just reset a number on the battery or something, can't you? |

There is the possibility to to softmod you battery to create Pandora's Battery, but it requires you to already have CFW. I'm not sure if the softmod can be used on PSPs still running under OFW though, you'll have to search.

Right I've found a "DATEL Max Power Tool Battery (PSP)" on amazon. It claims to be a perfectly fine pandora battery (able to put psp into service mode), and has numerous positive comments. Is it really as simple as buying this, finding a means to convert a standard MSPD into a MMS, then stick them both in together and turn it on? Is it as simple as then following instructions? Also, can the MMS be reformatted (to use as standard MSPD again)?
Is it possible to simply use a MMS to straight install a recent CFW (eg. 3.90 M33-2) without having to use this to instal 1.5, then upgrade that. How does this actually work, would I have to go from 3.9 (ofw) -> 1.5 (ofw) -> 3.90 M33-2 (cfw), or could I just use this technique to go from current 3.9 (ofw) -> 3.90 M33-2 (cfw)?
Cheers for your help  |

Although I would generally stray from any Pandora's Battery that was not made from an official Sony battery, if you want to try out DATEL's battery, be my guest.
In essence, using Pandora's along with the MMS is relatively simple. There are multiple guides around the forums that are extremely easy to follow. And yes, after you're done with the MMS, you can revert it back to normal use. This can be achieved by formatting the memory stick through the same means as when you were creating the MMS (XP's "cmd" and what not) and then formating again, but this time, with the PSP.
As for the FW tree process, here it goes;
OFW 3.90 -> Pandora's + MMS -> CFW 3.52 M33-4 (or CFW 3.71 M33-#, I can't recall) -> CFW 3.90 M33 -> CFW 3.90 M33-2

Right, well that does seem pretty straightforward. So basically I just need to get hold of a Pandora Battery (or something to that avail) to get my psp into service mode, then booting from the files that'll be on the MMS (which I'm guessing is as simple as a download or 2 from what I've seen online). Use the service boot to install either 3.52 M33-4 or 3.71 M33-x (which i imagine is as simple as selecting "install FW 3.XX " when in service mode?
Then I imagine I can download the later CFW's from Dark-Alex and just update in the way I normally would (GAME\UPDATE)?
Is that correct?  |

Kinda correct.
Your PSP isn't the item that's going into service mode, your battery is. Pandora's Battery is just a fancy, and kind of sexy, name for a battery who has entered into service mode.
But that aside, essentially, once you've acquired Pandora's Battery and a MMS, make sure the battery's fully charged and then take it out of the PSP (with the PSP powered down completely.) Once done, make sure your MMS is inserted and your PSP is not plugged into the AC adapter. Now the beauty happens; put your Pandora's Battery into your PSP. I'll leave the rest for you to find out in the detailed guides.

Dear Hoi Yant,
I think the MMS, i can solve it. Just the Pandora's Battery is very difficult. Bcos I really don't know how to create? So bad.

Jacky
