Custom vs. Official Low Old Firmware

The topic title is a bit vague, but it's a straightforward question.

What's the point of having custom firmware at all? All the emulators I want to run don't work for custom firmware(all the SNES ones I can find, anyway) and nothing on my PSP seems to be really changed. Is it just for custom utilities like PSPTube or what?

Some games won't run on a lower firmware & if you want to run homebrew games & apps you can't do it without CFW.As for the emulators they work on a phat but you need 1.5 kernel for a slim & thats why there is Time machine.
