Actually the DEFAULT is 222MHZ and if you overclock it to 333MHZ, your risk burning up you cpu. and yes there is software available to do this, but why would you want to ??? games that come on the UMD, work just fine at 222MHZ, it's the ROMs that run via HOMEBREW apps, that some need the 333MHZ.

i dont think it burns up your CPU
the psp was originally designed to run at 333mhz but the battery life sucked so sony turned it down to 222mhz

Everything I read about overclocking to 333MHZ at your own risk, it's doesnt literally burnup, like a CPU in a PC, but could malfunction.
It's always fun to try, but since there is no gaurantee, long uses at this rate 333MHZ won't trash your PSP and games play fine at 222MHZ, why bother... but that's my opinion anyone on here been running their PSP at 333MHZ for long periods of time ???
P.S. Even The GTA:LCS cheat let's you overclock your PSP to 333MHZ, I haven't bothered.
I just grabbed this from GEEKS.COM : 333MHz PSP processor runs at 222MHz BLURB
Speculation is starting to mount that Sony has capped the processing power of its PSP handheld. Apparently the 333MHz RISC chip is currently capped to run at a maximum of two-thirds its speed, or 222MHz. The reasons for the capping are unclear, but the most obvious is thought to be to save battery power. Capping the processing speed would in theory increase the machine's running time, sacrificing the available speed. It is also thought that Sony plans to release an updated PSP in the future that will sport a better battery and have the processor cap removed. Current owners will be able to buy the new battery, and a software update will remove the processor cap. This is all speculation, but it would seem like a simple solution to the battery problem just before the machine's release. People are already messing about with the software on the machine and trying to get applications running on it; how long before someone figures out how to unlock this alleged processor cap? Thanks to GamesRadar.com for the heads-up.

i was wondering this as well. i was playing Mario Kart SNES last night and it was really choppy even with the skip-frame rate up if i had it below 333mhz. if any one knows if this is any harm at all for your psp plz let me know

I'm personally not going to overclock mine. For one, I want to play for a half decent amount of time, i've played the 222mhz and it runs just fine, but i'm not into homebrew, so that's me.

wrong, wrong wrong.... the psp's cpu is a 333 mhz chip, sony has ony limited it to save on battery life (and to make everyone buy the games that use the fiull power when they come out) it isnt overclocking. its putting up to what its neant to... breaking down an underclock, thats all it is.... IT WILL WORK, it DOES work, and always will work (unless you cnt get to that art of your psps (LOL, anyone over1.5 :-P) sony has the ability to make really long lasting batteries, but they are far too expensive, so until the battery is sufficent to give the same ammout of gameplay, sony will keep the cap. it also looks like games set the cpus speed, not the firmwares, as with the gta cheat device, i remember being able to rrun it a 333mhz.... if anyone has anything to add, tell me.
so anyone saying different should shut up... |

Oh lord do not under any circumstances run your PSP at 333! You will fry it up and have to buy a new one. Sony will not honor your warranty if you overclock their system!!! Mario Kart should run fine at 222, but it may be lagging because of too much stuff on your memory card. I would reformat your memory card first and then try again with a lower framerate and lowered clock speed to 222.
