Help a noob out?
Hello,
I just got a (fat) psp yesterday with v3.95 firmware. I've tried adding homebrewed games and it never works (i get a 80020148 error). I've read quite a bit on many downgrades and on cfw, etc.
I'd like to get custom firmware, but i'm not so sure if i should (of if i can, with my firmware version?). I read about pandora's battery and that seems to be the most popular thing (although im still not quite sure what it is...) but it seems kinda risky.
Please, can someone explain these things to me and guide me thru this? |

danos: That post says Quote: |
***Dont try this on the psp 3000 or 2000 with TA-088v3 Motherboard*** 4 those who dont know bout this, I've tested this several times on my G.O.W. 2001 TA-088v2 and has worked fine every time.
| I don't even know what that means x] . how can i tell if it'll work for me?
Bewood: Thanks, i'll try that if danos' method doesnt work (& as soon as i get wireless set up)
Also, once i get cfw, will i be able to upgrade and stuff? or will my psp become outdated? What exactly does cfw do? If i don't like it, will i be able to go back to ofw? |

Basically, Custom Firmware is the same as normal. It just opens more things to do.
Such as playing backups of your games(ISO's,CSO's), Emulators(gba, n64, snes), custom xmb themes, Coldboot(sound and picture on boot of psp), cintro's(video that starts on boot), and much much more.

Outlandish: Bewood's HEN method is easily the quickest way to install CFW. There is no risk involved, because even in the highly unlikely event you suffer a brick, pandora is still able to unbrick your psp.
In the years the fat's been around, CFW install processes have become far more stable than what you might be getting told by the VERY OLD downgrader threads you've been reading.
Also, the reason homebrew is not working is because you need CFW to run it. |

Hmm.. these instructions say its only for 5.03 firmware. Say i get 5.03, install the cfw... can i then upgrade to the newest version? |

From there, you can install CFW and upgrade that all the way to 5.00 M33-6 if you wish.
I don't think upgrading your official firmware version is a good idea. At 5.03 I think you'd need Pandora.. |

Oh, I wasn't aware there was a method like that..
Well, according to this guide, take the file in that link and put it in your GAME folder. Then, go on your PSP and go to the UMD thing, then go down and select your memory stick. In there, you should be able to run the update. |

I took a look at the file the guide links to.
You didn't put the .7z file in there right? That file extension is just a compression. You have to unzip it.
EDIT: So yea unzip it and put the UPDATE folder in the GAME folder. The EBOOT should be in the UPDATE folder. That's what the guide instructs anyway.
