Game Title :
Final Fantasy Game Description : Starting way back in 1988, Final Fantasy was a last resort for Hironobu Sakaguchi to keep Square out of bankruptcy (Hence the name Final Fantasy). But it turned out to be one of, if not the, most popular RPG series on the planet. Using a turn-based battle system similar to that of the Dragon Quest series, Final Fantasy has been well known for a lot of its innovative additions to the RPG genre.

The graphics in Final Fantasy for the PSP aren’t very surprising. They were expected and quite simple. But as a 2-D game, it isn’t all that horrible. The spell effects can be quite beautiful and the character models and environments are more detailed than a lot of the earlier renditions. The colours come out clear and vibrant too. I’m just not a huge fan of the style of graphics Square Enix used for this version. To me it can look like a Flashplayer game at times, but most of the time it doesn’t even though it can give off that look every once in a while. I preferred the style that the GBA version took. Had they mixed the two, the game could have been a stunning 2-D game.

The sound in this game is getting old for me now, seemings how I’m a huge Final Fantasy fan and I’ve heard a lot of the tunes before already. Even if I’ve heard these so many times, it’s still a lot of fun coming back to it and reliving the memories. The music has also received a large upgrade in quality so it’s a little easier to listen to than just hearing the exact same tunes again. The sound effects aren’t anything I really need to note. They are basically the same thing that we’ve heard before, but it works just the same. Overall the sound is decent, but nothing more.

The controls don’t need a lot of explaining. It’s a turn-based RPG, so there isn’t a lot you can screw up when making one. Especially for an early game like this one, it really only needed two buttons to begin with other than the directional pad, so I’d be surprised if this some how got screwed up in the mix. So the controls are quite solid as a result and shouldn’t be too much of a problem at all.

Okay, time for gameplay. I’m going to try and not be biased, and I apologize if I do, but I’m a huge Final Fantasy fan and I’m trying to be as harsh as I can. The gameplay is the same turn-based combat that you’ve seen since the first one with some slight enhancements, but nothing more too it. There is an added dungeon, but it isn’t anything that big. Overall, I’d say the gameplay is getting old in today’s world of innovative RPG’s, but it’s still puts a smile on an old RPG veteran as myself.

Overall, this game is still pretty good, I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who is looking for a new RPG experience or a large one because this game really only last 20-30 hours. I would , however, recommend it to RPG beginners or people that want an RPG to last them until the next one. It’s nothing new and it’s pretty old, but if you still love the simple turn-based combat system that was evident in the 80’s I would suggest trying this one for sure if you haven’t already. Mildly recommended.
