Beats
Guys,
So I bought this game earlier, like an hour ago. The price came out to be 4.99 + 50 or so cents in taxes, so the final price was 5.~ USD.
So I've played a few songs on it so far, and I must say, I am very impressed with the graphics, and the loading times. Beats does exactly what it's intended to do, to bring out the best of the PSP's music capabilities. It doesn't seem like this game was ever designed for intensive gaming, but rather casual gaming on the get-go, or just as something to do before you doze off to bed.
For those of you who do not know what BEATS is, in the simplest manner, it's a game that functions based on the music that you have on your memory stick, and it plays very much like a rhythm game. A good example would be a time-based tetris games in which the time is controlled by your own music. Audio Wise:
The sound was decent, and didn't seem too loud or soft. However, please note that I have my AVLS and Dynamic Equalizer turned on. I know the AVLS limits the max volume, but I am not sure if BEATS utilizes the DE while it's in the game itself, or if it has its own DE built into the system. Something to note is so far, I've only tested it with mp3s. I am unsure if this will work with .wma or .atrac3. Most likely, it will not. Also, you want to ensure that your .mp3's sample rates are 44hz, and not 22.1hz. If it's 22.1hz, you'll get an error saying that the song is not playable. Graphics Wise:
I have no qualms about the graphics, and for what it does, it is absolutely superb. I have never seen a PS3 in person, but I can tell you, it's a bloody huge eye-candy for a game tagged at 4.99 USD at the Playstation Store. It's crisp, clear, and highly influenced by modern art trends (You'll be wondering if you're holding a Playstation 3 Portable). All in all, it does the job amazingly well. My only complaint is that sometimes, although the graphics are nice, some of the visualizers do give me a headache and make me giddy and dizzy. However, this is not a drawback point, it just means that I don't like that in-game visualizer. Not to worry, you have loads and loads of visualizers to choose from! Apart from that, the ability to set your themes (main menu), and to choose between dynamic (if the main menu will have animation and music) or static is a very nice perk to the game. It's surprising how many perks they are willing to stuff into a game that's only 4.99 USD. Overall:
Based on the 5 tracks I've played so far, I have to admit, this game gives you too much bang for that buck that you forked over. I feel like I'm playing a game that could have been priced at 14.99 USD, and it would still have sold pretty nicely. It's a game that let's you listen to music in a new way, be it on the bus, or in the passenger seat of the car (I DO NOT RECOMMEND PLAYING THIS GAME WHEN YOU ARE DRIVING A VEHICLE, seriously.), in an airplane, or just about anywhere. If you like listening to music, and you want to get more out of your time than just listening to music, this will definitely tailor to your taste.
Notes:
I've noticed that it is generally better to try and use good quality MP3s, those with good bitrates, (128 ~ 192) and to use music that has a normal rhythmic drum beat to it. The system processes this much better as compared to an MP3 that is about Pavarotti (R.I.P my good sir) singing. For example, one of the songs I playtested was Nickelback - Someday running at 160 bitrate. It was simply amazing, the timing was stunning, and perfect. It made me feel like I was playing the music itself. Also, if you are finding the game to be too easy, I suggest you play it in hard mode. Out of the 5 songs I've played, only 1 was played in normal mode, and the rest was in hard. Hard mode seems to capture the song better in my opinion.
Alright, enough blabbering, this game is definitely a no brainer for the money you'll be paying for it. And come on, it's only 237mb. Even if you don't play it, I guarantee you, it's one of the games you'll keep on your 1gb ~ 8gb memory stick, just because it's that worthy of being kept on your memory stick.
I give it a solid 9 / 10.
Cheers guys. P.S Just get the game, and give up one meal at the BK Lounge. It's that cheap. You won't regret it.
