The title says it all. You'll
Siege Dungeon after
Dungeon and the boredom will be pure
Agony, so much that you'll think this game deserves to sit on the
Throne of Agony. (bad puns? sorry)
Note: This is a Dungeon Crawler. I'm assuming that the reader has some experience with them so I wont go into detail about the genre. I'm also doing this review from the view of the Mage character, as that's the one I completed the game on.
The Good:
This game gives you several sidekicks with back stories who's skills you can customize and they fill any role you'de like, from healer, to brawler, to mage. ect. This is a great feature more dungeon crawlers should have and it makes you not feel so all alone.(Especially useful on the PSP since you will likely only be playing solo)
It also has a nice compare feature for picking up items. You can instantly compare any item you pick up with what you have equipped to see if its worth it to keep the item.
Every piece of armor changes the actual appearance of your character.
Your character can "advance" twice to a more evolved form of itself, each with its own new skills (sadly not that many new ones) Example; My mage at lvl 30 could become a white mage or dark mage. I chose dark. Then at lvl 60 he could become a lich(undead sorcerer) or a dread knight.
Since its on the PSP you actually get to attack using buttons which is nicer than just clicking on enemies with your mouse over and over.
The quests were usually short or broken up into about 15 minute segments making it easy to play on the go. An attribute that a lot of hand held games are missing for some reason, when it should be a number one priority.
The Bad:
That sidekick as well as any minions you summon have awful AI control. The sidekick will cast its spells and attack seemingly at random and will stand in traps dying and not cast its heal spell. The only one i found to be semi useful was the monk as she sped up the time between battles with her random healing and her automatic ability to speed up my mana regeneration.
The compare feature doesn't let you auto-equip the item if it is better. You have to back out of the compare menu and pull up your item menu and take off your current item and place the item you picked up. Annoying waste of time.
The story sux.
The enemy AI is pathetic and the bosses are equal in difficulty to every other creature in the game. Not an ounce of strategy is needed what so ever.
The Ugly
All those other faults can and usually are dismissed by most players of dungeon crawlers for the one aspect of the game they're after. THE AWESOME SKILLS!
Sadly this game fails to offer even that. For starters my mage fought better and killed things faster in physical combat than his spells could ever do. He might as well have been a warrior class for all the use i got out of his short list of spells. The minion summoning was random, giving you a 10% chance to summon a minion and no control over their numbers or a real knowledge of their power.
Many of the skills were mistyped. Example; one of the skills said it increased mana regeneration by + 0.50%, which at 1/2 a percent made me think that it sucked. when in actuality after i learned it, it actually increased it by 50%.
Others simply were so vague I never really understood what they did.
I gritted my teeth and ground my way through the boredom hoping the end-game skills would be worth the work but sadly when I got there they were not.
In the end I should have just played through Diablo for the hundred thousandth time using the psx version. It would have been more enjoyable.
