Game Description : A portable hybrid of Burnout 3, 4 and Paradise. One of the best psp racers Ive played, simply because it simply captures the spirit of Burnout for the PSP. While the Crash Mode is absent, the game makes up for it in Maniac Mode. Maniac Mode is basically racking up points while drifting, near missing traffic, and driving into oncoming traffic. All of this sounds pretty vanilla Burnout, but in practice its alot more fun than it sounds. The Burnout Boost meter returns here, and that can theoretically give you infinite boost, if you can pull off enough stunts to keep the meter going. Racking up Burnouts nets you more points for the current mission, and quite certainly makes scoring the higher points easier in Maniac Mode. Letting go of the boost button starts you all the way back over. Road Rage returns here, but takes sort of a back seat to the other modes and I wish it was implemented more in the game. While in a race you can score Signature takedowns. Whats so special about these you ask? Taking down an opposing car in one of these zones clears up short cuts for later shortcuts. = WIN. Aftertouch takedowns return here, but the value of it really diminishes here because there are only 2 modes that you really get to use it in well. You also have a quick race option, and your times can be uploaded to your friends via ad-hoc connection. No go for career mode times though.
The game plays exceptionally well, and the graphics are almost on-par with what you would expect out of the PS2. Kudos to Criterion/EA for being able to pull off one of the most stunning looking titles on the PSP and at such a high framerate. If you played any of the Burnouts for the home consoles, you are sure to recognize the tracks, mostly taken from Burnout: Paradise. In game, cars crunch realistically, and the aftertouch explosions just sound great. Using headphones is highly recommended. The control is pretty lax, just tap the brake button and one end of your car will swing out as you turn. Also the collision detection is kinda weird because you can sometimes slam into a wall head on and not crash, while the slightest bump can cause you to. Often times you might get away from a crash that you really shouldnt have, but its usually balanced by the fact that you are moving at 0 mph. Not too noticable, sometimes its just easier to crash because at least you will be moving when you reset.
