Default So... Why Linux?

bump!

So firstly Id like to welcome myself back, I forgot about this forum until I got an email about some sort of PSP contest.. but whatever, I will probably try and stay active here, as the other forum I usually browse has gone to shit.

I already posted once in this thread, preaching about the game compatability in linux - I was obviously wrong. DarkED is completely right. ATi drivers in linux are sub-par at best, and Cedega is spotty.

I use Gentoo linux on my machine, and I love that I decided exactly what runs - I ditched gnome in favour of XFCE. but only after trying out GNOME, KDE, fluxbox, iceWM, and enlightenment.

As far as most of the people in this thread are concerned, I wish they would all fall into a well full of scorpions. I used to be pro-ubuntu, but have since realized that it is the cancer killing linux. If you need to format, or even restart your computer - you are using linux wrong. Making threads in your personal forum should be a last resort, there is a huge user base. Chances are you are not the first person to have that problem with linux, so learn to use google.

And in conclusion, have fun

Linux is just all around better then windows.

There are ALOT of distro's you can try

Many different Desktop Environments to try.. ex: gnome, XFCE, FluxBox, E-17 and more

99.9% of the software is free and/or open source.

It looks better, you can pretty much make it look like anything

Anything you can do on winblows you can do on linux.

Most people dont like moving to linux because they think there are no games. WRONG. There are actually alot of games to try on linux. You can also use wine to play SOME of your little games from winblows.

Another reason people dont install it is because they think it will be hard to use.. and they think you have to use a command like most of the time. That really isnt true its actually easy to use. You just gotta' get use it. But you do have to use the terminal alot, But I dont see how that is a problem.. I think its easier to use the terminal.

must i go on?

Just try it, just because someone has told you something negative about it doesent mean anything. Try it your self for atlease a few weeks.

I've been using Ubuntu since 5.10. I loved it. Seemed a lot smoother, and more user friendly than RedHat or Fedora. I am currently dual-booting XP Pro (I'm a domain admin at work) and Gutsy Gibbon Ubuntu. I am Going to install Kubuntu for the KDE to see how that is. The only issue I ever have with it is getting my WEP to work properly.

KDE is incredibly slow. I love gnome. its the perfect balance between aesthetics, functionality, and speed.
I love using linux (minus the fact that photoshop doesnt support it (damn adobe)) but i got tired of troubleshooting EVERYTHING. It seemed like once a week something would go wrong that would take hours to fix. Wasnt worth it to me.

Personally, being able to surf the internet while linux was installing was the "killer" for me.
What other OS would allow you to do that?

Linux is great. I ran HLDS (Half-Life Dedicated Server) for Counter Strike on RedHat 7.3 for a while, then when they introduced Steam I went ahead and upgraded to 9 for compatibility. All it needed was a power cord and a LAN cord. I controlled it entirely with SSH thru a windows<-->linux program called Putty. I don't need no stinking GUI!

I have used other distros too.. Mandrake 9 and of course who hasn't used Knoppix? In high school the MCSE teachers liked to restrict our windows user accounts to notepad and IE ONLY and intentionally set up our DNS settings to 1.1.1.1 and restricted our network settings access. Needless to say I fixed their @ss with my Knoppix cd.

Darked.. You said this:

EDIT: Something I forgot: With Linux you don't have to worry about viruses/spyware/trojans/hacks/exploits/backdoors/vulnerabilities. This is what made me switch, I got sick of fighting the spyware war with Windows.

Are you serious? how come? what if I get into a website that installs spywares .. How will Linux handle and defend against this attack?

most spyware comes in the form of a .exe, or windows executable. linux, by default, cannot run .exe files. so, no spyware.

they do , but in order for you to install it you would have to download the deb or rpm file, run it and give it administration privelages. On windows you just click a pop-up and shit starts installing itself. Thats why we have anti-virus programs and stuff. Until i can photoshop in linux i will be using windows/osx86.
Linus is also 100% open-source which means if any bug or vulnerability is found there will literally be 1000's of people scanning the code instantly and fixing the problem.

That's cool....I never new that about Linux. I really want to try it out someday. Can anyone suggest me to which version would be good for a life time Windows user. I really only go on forums and IMs. I rarely play games but when I do they are online games. I don't really have many needs.
