It is a neat mouse; no doubt. Your windows nature is showing, it's command; not control on a Mac. Although we do have a control button (vs. a ctrl button), command is the ctrl button on a Mac. No worries, I invite any input into the Mac section. |

looks like there is an included USB mouse with this PowerBook. My dell mouse has a scroll wheel and works with Tiger. Almost anything you plug USB into a Mac will hook up, especially in Tiger. Not to short change Panther, since it is an awesome OS that adapts just as well as Tiger. Apple knows it is a Windows world so they make their software ready to adapt to user needs. 1ghz puts you right in the middle of Tiger territory, and you could run leopard as well, even if you have to scale down some features. At this point the PPC support for leopard is up in the air. It will work on PPC Macs, but I don't know how extensive the support will get. You can juice this rig up to 2gb and be ready to kick ass in Tiger as well as Leopard. I imagine PPC support for Leopard will fall out at 10.5.4, but maybe they have learned a lesson with OS 9 and will make Leopard PPC capable up to 10.5.9, After Leopard we will get OS 11 and I can only imagine the awesomeness.
*according to Beta releases G4/G5 PPC Macs are supported with leopard as long as they have 256mb of RAM and 6GB of free hard drive space. |

PPC = Power PC, and Tiger, Leopard, etc are in Windows Terms comparable to XP SP1, and SP2, etc....except OSX
In my new MBP, one finger on the trackpad while clicking is a left click (primary), and two fingers on the trackpad while clicking is a right click (secondary). I also have a mighty mouse configured for both left and right click, but it can get kinda difficult to use.

This is the processor format Apple used to go with in the pre-Intel days.
Certain software only works with PPC and vice versa; altough most major releases provide for both platforms. They are making the transition to an Intel Mac world. However, I don't think they can abandon PPC as of now. Too many poeple dished out major cash on G5 PowerMacs which use the PPC.
OS X (or Macintosh operating system 10) replaced OS 9.
OS X comes in many different versions.
10.0 (cheetah)
10.1 (puma)
10.2 (jaguar)
10.3 (Panther)
10.4 (tiger)
10.5 (Leopard) *yet to be released
Each version has different updates. Leopard will be the first fully UNIX certified Mac OS meaning ANYTHING that works in UNIX will work in Leopard, and vice versa.
Because OS X was way ahead of its time interface updates are barely noticeable, although many important features were implicated with each release. Leopard is rumored to have a new GUI that has not been shown in Demos or BETA releases; I for one hope so. If not leopard will be a consumer Beta to OS 11.
All you need to know is that the PowerBook you are looking at will run Tiger just fine and thats enough for now, since Apple won't abandon Tiger anytime soon. All OS X releases are still supported by Apple, Cheetah through Tiger. It wil also run Leopard with no problems according to BETA release system requirements.
In other words if you get a good deal go for it.
* OS X releases are nothing like service packs. SP fixes flaws released in windows, OS X updates add features and compatability. What few flaws are found in OS X are easily patched for free with the software update feature found in the Apple menu. Apple has never released a SP, because they never relased an OS with major flaws like those Xp experienced and vista is struggling with.

As far as older OS for free legally, no. However OS X does not have a CD-key or activation. You could easily "borrow" a install disc and use it with no problems. One of Aple's main things is to not implicate the gayness of CD-KEYs and the Acivation process. |

iTunes is much better than winamp IMO, but to each its own.
As long as you dont let iTunes automatically organize your music collection, that you have already set-up the way you want. I made that mistake. It has good intentions, but did not setup the way I wanted. Then I had to redo everything, not that big of a deal; better than losing 60 something GB of Music.

No, a PPC Mac will not run Half life 2. To run Half Life 2 you need an Intel Mac that makes use of Boot camp. with an intel Mac you can dual boot OS X and XP/Vista. Apple made this available so that Mac users could get in on the gaming world, since DEVs were not interested in making OS X ports of a lot of games; Half life included. You might want to consider an Intel model if you want to play half life. Most poeple only use windows on a Mac for PC Gaming. PPC Macs support something called virtual PC which allows you to emulate XP on top of OS X, but the PowerBook will lack the juice to play half life 2 smoothly on top of OS X.
@ whitelamp
defintely, all the Intel Macs are going to be Leopard capable. |

but WoW will work right? id be happy with just that working. im buying it mostly for a portable entertainment rig. music, movies, wireless surfing, showing off pics and stuff to people. i aslo wanna learn the mac. BLACKOUT told me that its hot when chicks know how to work a mac. took me 5 yrs (still learning) to master windows, so hopefully the mac is alot simpler. i hate how windows seems to hide all the stuff it does... you learn new stuff by mistake most of the time |

last i knew, WoW was one of the first games to be a "dual release" as in it had both mac and windows installers on the cds... might be just for the dvd version though
my dell 5150 laptop has spent its entire life on a desk, so it would be nice to have a laptop thats actually portable. since im rather small in size, whats the weight on the laptop im bidding on? doesnt look very heavy. i know my 5150 is like 15lbs w/ battery. its a beast |
