Default Mac and iPod question

Essentially it's just a big external hard drive with multiple discs hooked on my network. As mentioned you will have better luck with panther, but in my opinion it's an OS9 machine. I would kick it old school, or make use of it for file hosting and back ups.

There is a terminal hack that allows you to time machine to networked drives, just a thought.

also someone step up an volunteer to admin the mac section, I don't keep on top of it anymore if you guys have not noticed.
Well id love to volounteer but its up to admin.

Anyway, Powermac G3's are the most ugly mac's ive ever seen. hated the whole coloured plastic thing apple had going on a while back.
And i never though of using old computers for hard-drives/file hosting. Ive always just threw them out or gave them away. Thanks for the tip
And 450 MHz must be a pain in the ass.
Im hoping my school will be selling some of their older macbooks (G4 i think), if they are im gonna buy one. Im not going to go straight in and buy a brand new one or a powerbook to run Bootcamp (although id love to)

Well mac is based off of The Unix System also. And im not sure about it being different, although i dont see why it would be, and i also dont know why anyone would want to install linux on a mac. Basically as i said before Mac is "related" to linux. They are both based from Unix, except mac uses utilities called Darwin, and of course a few other minor differences like the GUI etc...

I was thinking about the newer Mac OS X versions, not Mac OS 8, and i agree OS 8 does suck and is obviousy outdated

Default Mac and iPod question

OS X was the first Unix based Mac operating system. All Mac OS before it, were proprietary one off pieces of software, like MS windows. In other words they were built from the ground up, like Windows is. OS X was heavily based on the next step project that Steve was running before returning to Apple in 1997.

Notice the many similarities between the NeXT desktop and Early versions of OS X.

As for linux on a PPC mac, it is a completely different kernel, than the x86 kernel used for most computers (amd/intel machines). Ubuntu has PPC distros, as well as a few others, but I think ubuntu is your best bet for ease of use, and feature set.

They don't make powerbooks anymore, so you won't be buying one new; and they are PPC not intel so no winblows compatibility. Also, G4 laptops are known are going to either ibooks, or power books; Intel machines are macbooks or macbook pros. You just had it backwards .

Dont try Julie, shes left... admin always seems to respond to my PM's requesting a thread closed or something lol

I like the NeXt desktop, it actually looks clean and practical. Obviously its outdated, and i do see some similarities between that and older mac versions, especially OS 7.
I didnt know Ubuntu had power pc distros. I though they only had distros for intel computers.

Default Mac and iPod question

...whats with all this stuff about a G3 powerpc not being able to run tiger?

ibook g3 powerpc 600MhZ and 328mb ram running tiger just fine, but does choke on videos, but since i have a macbook and a imac for that, and my ibook is only for school work, i don't care one bit, but tiger runs just fine on a G3 of atleast 500MhZ.

and i think id make a great mod over in this section, id be at the site more if i was, and my mac knowledge is extensive, and all i myself own are macs, my father has to have a windows xp laptop cause thats the only laptop the college he teaches at offers...but admin thats up to you, but ive been a major help here in the past from the start of psp slim modding and on till about 2 1/2 months ago.

Id reckon youd make a better mod of this section than me. So Good luck

And would you recommend any items on ebay for a starter macbook, i would be of course wanting to run XP, and itd need to have leopard (and i would have a budget of about $800) I see cheap macbooks on ebay but im not sure if theyre a scam.
Thanks

i actually got my ibook on ebay, and the thing is great except for physical scratching on the outside, but the screen is perfect.

uhm, it just kind of depends, if you see any you like PM me the links and lemme have a look, cause ive known people to get screwed one way or another. I can tell you tho, that you can't use a powerpc mac to bootcamp windows, G3/G4.

and thanks about the mod bit man XD

OK thanks, im on ebay just now. Looking at both ibooks and macbooks.
And i know to get bootcamp i cant get a PPC processor, needs to be an intel... which would push the budget up a bit, i might even settle for a PPC, and just run windows on my desktop.
im still deciding wether to just do hackintosh or buy one, but ill definetly PM you some links, and no problem about the mod bit, you certainly know your mac stuff
Thanks
