Help Repairing The Backlight Fuse

Do it Yourself PSP fuse repair

I have no idea how to "solder" does anyone know what he's talking about? Or where to get the tool for soldering.

My backlight fuse is probably dead, because I ordered 2 new psp lcds already and both of them doesn't work. The backlight won't turn on!

You can pick up a nice little soldering kit over at radioshack. I recommend the COLDHEAT one since it is designed for very tiny solder points. You might want to get an extra small tip for it.

The coldheats are nice, but be careful, as they get very hot, very fast and can burn right through a PCB.

Well guys, your not supposed to apply pressure. You just sorta hold it in place. Hard to explain, you gotta develope a feel for it I guess. If your gonna use a regular soldering gun, you have to take in to consideration heat sinks, insulators and you really need to know what your doing in order not to drop solder in the wrong place.

Thanks a lot for all the info. I don't think I want to try to solder my motherboard I might mess up it some more. Can I swap my TA-81 motherboard with another downgraded TA-81? Will it mess up my PSP or anything?

Well technically, the motherboard is the PSP since the rest is merely a screen and some plastic. Yeah you can swap the motherboard, but if you're going to do that, you might as well grab another PSP, which is totally unnecessary.

Here is what actually helped me out (bolded):

- Backlight blown (Does'nt happen many times)
- Backlight Fuse (possible)

if the fuse is turned off, you can test this. Here are a few tips to test it:
- Use a voltagemeter to see if the first and last pins of the backlight are giving you 33volts. (Do NOT let the pins go from side to side, otherwise your fuse will blown, except if it is already blowned up. Wink)
- Use a wire and put it from side to side on the fuse (while screen connected and psp turned on).

All I did was use a modem copper wire (extremely thin) and wrapped it around the back light fuse (FD) made sure it was tight and my tested it with my LCD and it came on! I don't know how to solder, so I did it the lazy way. Anyways I hope this could help someone out with their back light problem.

I have fixed a backlight fuse by soldering, its very delicate though.

I'll remember your trick Casual....might come in handy...

Also another trick, if the wire falls out to easily even when tighten you can use electric tape to stick it in place, but make sure your back light turns on whenever you stick the electric tape on the wire that's on the fuse.

i had coldheat at one point and as soon as i turnd it one that thin point cracked in half... same happned to my friend i suggest 2 not buy it
