Well there is always Trial + Error, then returning!
Try it out with a pandora and magic memory stick, if it doesn't work, return it, or sell it to a friend.
But from the looks of what everyone has said, you are absolutely fine.

How can i tell if my motherboard is a TA-088 excluding opening it up
I'd like to share my hellish experience and some tips to help spare you from experiencing the same.
I was going to wait and buy a psp 3000, but I decided to get a current moddable slim to use english-translation patches on games I planned to import.
After doing many searches online about how to tell if the psp I'm buying is a TA-088 v3 without opening it, I saw people say stuff like "If the serial number is on the box, that means it's an older psp and you're safe." and "The TA-088 v3 is only on the mint green psp." So when I went to my local walmart and didn't see any of that on the last standalone psp there, I bought it.
Brought it home, cut into the plastic wrapping of death and turned it on. Checked the firmware version. Firmware v4.01. Frick! So not only did I think I was stuck with an unmoddable psp, I was stuck with a slim when the 3000 was coming out in less than a week.
Disappointed and frustrated, I decided to test the "excellent returnability of Walmart" that I've always heard about. Luckily, they let me exchange it for the blue madden psp pack and pay the difference. Brought that home and turned it on. Firmware v3.95! I'm feeling pretty relieved as I've seen many people reporting success with the blue madden psp.
So, if you want to avoid all the trouble and stress I went through:
1. Buy a psp bundle. Doesn't matter which, as from what I've read, they all should be fine.
2. Don't buy a standalone psp. If you really don't want to spend the extra money for a bundle, wait for the 3000 and hope DAX eventually cracks it. If you're gonna be stuck with an unmoddable psp, it might as well be a 3000. |

There's still a chance that even with the 4.01OFW PSP Slim the unit may still be moddable. The only way to tell is if you put in a Pandora Battery and MMS. The Slim I recently purchased had the 4.01OFW and now it's running the 4.01 M33-2. The key is to have the right tools for the job prior to making the purchase. Using PSPIdent (after modding) I was able to confirm the board is a TA-088v2. Don't rely on just the OFW of the unit to determine if the PSP Slim is moddable.

How can i tell if my motherboard is a TA-088 excluding opening it up
So if I haven't bought a psp slim yet, and want to get one, what's the best way for me to get a downgradeable one if I'm ordering online?
Do any of the value packs come with a piano black psp?
Thanks for any help. |
