Now completely tearing the PSP down is more like a 7/10. So really, if you're comforable with small screwdrivers its quite doable. The only things you want to be careful of is the LCD and not getting fingerprints on the inside of the faceplate. Compressed air is handy for reassembly too. | Ah OK, could you maybe give me a quick run down on the tools that are required for this? |

Small screwdriver set
Tweezers
Compressed air
Dremel with cutting disk
Heck if you don't have a dremel you could propably make do with a drill or just a sharp knife an patience. Luckily in this mod, both places you need to cut plastic are hidden, so if it isnt perfect, you dont see it anyway. I learned how to use the dremel back in my xbox modding days. I used to make custom cases and put xboxs in other cases like a NES case. It's a fun hobby! |

thanks for this awesome mod SYPH. This open up a whole new world for PSP.
My only concern would be the cost effectiveness of this mod vs SDHC mod using a $3 USB SDHC card reader, $6 DUO-microsd converter, and a single 32gig SDHC card that you can find on newegg for $127.
Both ways has some advantages... Fastcard...... vs...... USB
~$170USD........... ~$140USD
Easy to do........... requires some soldering skills.
internal............... internal mod also
Only sdhc............ can use 6 different types of mem cards if you use a 6 to 1 card reader.
$30 difference is a lot... what do you all think..? |

Sounds easy enough to do, I might just hack away at it on saturday. Quote:

$30 difference is a lot... what do you all think..? | Main difference is skill level needed and speed.
This mod has a faster read and write speed than when I tried with a sd card and memory stick adapter. This mod also requires zero soldering so its easier and faster. Not everyone has the skill or patience to solder a ribbon cable onto the memory slot of a PSP mobo. I've done it but it took me awhile. Also remember that when 32 gb cards become cheaper, this mod can take you to 64 gb if you want. I think I'm fine with 32.. heck even 16 would have been enough for me, but I can't help it, I have more fun modding things than using them most of the time.
Oh also I liked that it would be possible to remove it pretty easy if i wanted. I have 4 PSP slims, and if this one died on me, I could pretty easily move it to another.

Really as long as you are gentle and dont force something too hard, you really cant break anything. Basically you can buy replacement plastic parts from DX all under 3 bucks for any part you might break, except the LCD. Its really the valuable part, so just be careful. If you need help or get stuck let me know, I'd be happy to assist. |

I'm not really sure what the compressed air is for.
It's just me, but I've never used it. |

Those 2 alone makes it worth the added cost.
Not to sound like a cheap bastard or anything but by looking at the PCB and SD card layout of the CR-3100 unit, is it possible to make your own by using two solder together sd readers, ribbon cable and Duo adapter...? |

The first time I took a faceplate off there was dust underneath and it really bugged me. I got some compressed air and it just makes it so much easier to have it clean. You can lift up the edge of the facplate and insert the nozzle and blow anything clean. Then power on the screen and check, repeat till perfect. Then when closed it looks as good as when it was first bought. |

Its not jsut wiring cards together. There is an IC controller that works to use them as one card. |

1. Sony wants to sell UMD's, the psp was introduced 3.5 years ago, this is in a time when the idea of buying games from the ps-store (which wasn't nearly what it is now if even in existence) would not have sat well with customers. Most customers want a physical product in their hands.
2. The psp is even cheaper for the masses. Having a system that's catered to the masses is a great thing, because it drives the prices down.
3. Flash memory prices are falling very very fast, about 1 year ago i wanted a 6gb microsdhc, i was about to pay $85 for one, now I can get a 8gb microsd for $33 shipped! Flash memory is far superior for a portable device, I never want to run or do any physical activity with my ipod because I'm worried about damaging the physical harddrive. Harddrives are more expensive to manufacturer, they consume more power, and they weigh more. The only advantage that a harddrive offers is higher capacity. Sony is just now putting 160gig drives in their ps3. When the PS3 was introduced the higher end model had 60gigs. Sony would never drop a fat harddrive in the psp, and if it did it would have cost $500. With this, we pay $60 to get this adapter, $40 shipped (as of now) for a 16gig SD card, and the prices are dropping.
I'm willing to bet that within 1 year the 32gig SD is going to be $50 or less.
After I do this mod, I can eliminate my ipod. |
