Question Sound Reactive LED mod not reacting to sound???...

Hello, all

I have a PSP 1001 and a long time ago I did an shoulder button led mod on it. this was my first psp mod and it looked like crap. Since im a lot more experienced now, I recently decided to redo it. I bought 30 guage kynar wire and the (F###### small) 0603 SMD leds. I got some new L+R buttons too cause I trashed the others. so anyway, I installed a total of 6 leds and they work fantastic and look really nice and professional...but although they are wired directly to the +/- on the speakers, they dont seem to be sound reactive. Am I missing something here? I thought that on the Phats you just wired to the speakers and you were good-to-go...

Do I need a resistor or something??? I know on the slims you do. Since they are bright and nice looking its not a huge concern but I am curious as to whats wrong????

Any input appreciated!!!

I've found that you need to have the volume turned up almost all the way for the effect to be most noticeable.

I really don't know what to tell you though without seeing your wiring and whatnot.

There's your problem. You don't want to wire these in series, you want to wire them in parallel.

actualy all led mod's i seen do this

o = Led
+/- = self explanatory
~ = wire to next SMLED

+o-~+o-~+o-~+o-~+o-~+o-

Don't do it in a ladder formation

And not sure about the output of a psp speaker so a resistor may be needed since if to much power going to it you wont realy see subtle changes without really staring

But to be safe personally i would use a resistor

It's one of those weird bots, the firmware is the same as the username.

All 27 of the LED mods I've done it parallel would say otherwise. I've never wired these in series and I won't.

You don't need a resistor at all. The only colors that need a resistor are red, orange, amber, and yellow. These colors can only handle 2.4V peak; the speakers output 3.6V peak. A 1/8W 47 Ohm resistor will work for these four colors. If you want to move more to the safe side use a 1/8W 60 Ohm resistor, but keep in mind it won't be as bright.

But if you're using any other color you don't need a resistor. Again, I've never once had a customer bring me back a PSP with a dead LED. I test cycle all of my LED mods with 2 hours of death metal and rap on full volume just to make sure everything is good to go.
