Help me pick a laptop X\
I am lookin for a new laptop and I have no idea where to start... I am lookin for one that can run 360 games(GAMES FOR WINDOWS) needing Windows Vista, so most of these games require a nice Nvidia or ATI and a duo core processor.
It needs:
4gigs of ram
good Nvidia/ATI graphics card
512MB video ram
duo core processor
reasonable resolution
Windows Vista
I cannot afford an Alienware so don't link me to a 4000USD Alienware with 9000gigs of ram and 100million TB of harddrive space..
budget is 500-799USD
Please no foreign sites, just US.
EDIT: Is this an alright of a laptop? anyone got a confirmation on the brand? Averatec N2740TD1E-1 Notebook PC - Intel Pentium Dual-Core T3400 2.16GHz, 4GB DDR2, 250GB HDD, DVDRW, 12.1" WXGA, Vista Home Basic 64-bit at TigerDirect.com

If you don't mind the brand, Gateway sells really cheap gaming laptops.
I got mine with Geforce 9800 for less than $1200.
Check TigerDirect.com or gateway.com. |

Build a desktop for gaming and buy a cheapo (read 5-8 years old from ebay) laptop for portability... That'll fit your budget and get you a gaming rig plus a laptop.... Best of both worlds.

laptops really make you pay the premium for good gaming. If i were you I would try and save for another couple weeks and move that budget up to 1k - 1.2k, would make a major leap in graphics power. |

i have a pretty good sense for gaming laptops
i would NEVER consider a Sony with that budget, much less for a gaming lappy.
go for either a Hp or a Gateway with intel processor, however gateway has lower quality monitors and speakers. also, go with a nvidia chipset if possible.
for running current-gen games, i'd recommend a geforce 8500 at least, and remember that a 8500 > 9200, third digit is the important one. u might need to spend $700 at least for one, and a very decent one for $800.
i were you though, i'd wait for christmas, or better yet black friday. 2 reasons: the obvious; u might get a better deal, AND windows 7 is comin out and u WILL want that on ur pc. seriously my old lap DIED because of vista. stupid forced updates.
4 gigs ram? erm try 3. wait and eventually a nice cheap PNY 4g memkit will come out. unless u want to play several games at once.
edit: and almost forgot, try best buy, newegg, costco, sam's and ebay. sometimes even officemax has very nice deals on game-ish lappies

i would Stay away from budget style ones that are compaqs. its not a gaming laptop but an example of a Crapass laptop by compaq: the Presario R3000 Ughh ATI Radeon Mobility 9000 IGP then it being involved in part of a world wide Class action lawsuit against compaw (for Faulty/damaged AC jacks )
like suggested try sites like dealextreme or tiger direct. just i advise against Compaq ones that seem "Too good to be true" because Most likely it is. |

Okay no Compaqs or Sonys, and yes I am waiting for christmas but it's better to look now for a preemptive review on everything, I don't understand why I need windows 7... what if ALL my programs end up requiring XP or vista? is there any confirmation that windows 7 can run GAMES FOR WINDOWS?
Tried Buy.com I found some good ones in my price range, but they are brands I never even heard of...
I will not do dealextreme, that site gets its items from a foreign country, meaning it is more than likely to get stolen or lost very easily.
I am typing this post currently with my HP 1.80 GHz 989MB of ram, it is really really bad for gaming but perfect for IMin, website huntin, and other such small things.
If I can find an HP with all that I am looking for, that would be heaven!
EDIT: I might look for a gateway, anyone know if they suck or not? they must be cheap for most schools to have used them... Averatec N2740TD1E-1 Notebook PC - Intel Pentium Dual-Core T3400 2.16GHz, 4GB DDR2, 250GB HDD, DVDRW, 12.1" WXGA, Vista Home Basic 64-bit at TigerDirect.com

There is absolutely no reason to still be buying Vista when 7 is out this week. |
