New and no idea where to start

Hello. I got a psp slim but I don't know how to check the firmware. Although I'm pretty sure it has whatever firmware that psp slims come with. I have a pandoras battery my brother gave to me but I don't know where to start to mod a psp for emulators, homebrew, viewing youtube, flash, and etc. I looked at the stickies but I don't know which ones to use for beginners. I'd greatly appreciate it if someone could help me out because someone from a different forum gave me wrong files and instructions to ruin my old psp knowing I was new and purposely tried to screw it up so I won't be going back there again
