It's possible that it's a TA-088v3 motherboard. If that is the case, then I regret to inform you that your friend is screwed. The v3's cannot be Pandora'd.

The only way to know for sure at this point would be to open the PSP (voiding his warranty) and see what's written on the motherboard.

Unless you can verify what type of motherboard it has, you'll have to assume it's unhackable. Sorry.

Tell your friend to either send it to $ony or buy a new PSP. Preferably a 2000 with a hackable motherboard.

i found this on another site

the code wich is locaded in the bottom side of your psp if it starts with:

AB021600000 then it has a TA-088v1 Motherboard (Wich is Hackable)
AB022499999, then it has a TA-088v3 Motherboard (Wich is NOT Hackable)

Another way to find if your psp is hackable is by taking out the battery and you see the Serial #, If the serial Nuber starts with:

HU2160000 then the PSP has a TA-088v1 Motherboard (Hackable)
HU2249999 then the PSP has a TA-088v3 Motherboard (NOT Hackable)

the psp i'm working has the bottomw code of AB023745544
and the serial number under the battery HU2374554

would this help me figure it out the motherboard type
