    Hello.

My brother had a PSP-1000 long ago, and abandoned it. I picked it up to see about modding it, and luckily enough, I checked the firmware and it was 3.80 m33. I should have guessed custom firmware for other reasons as well...anyway, I now have a highly hackable PSP. Now, all I need to do is figure out how to upgrade it to the most stable version, and get it doing what I want it to do...

    Thank you.

It seems like this is a more comprehensive method but slightly more complicated method than the guide "How To Easily Install PSP CFW 5.50", and that the Recovery Flasher can do other things besides upgrade to cfw 5.5 . Is that it, or is there something I am missing?

recovery flasher can install ofw 3.71-5.00, or cfw 3.71-5.00 to update to 5.50GEN-D3 you can use its updater.

Well, it's not like I stole it, and it's not like he outright gave it to me. He abandoned it in a chest of drawers and I picked it up. He in turn had received it from my sister.

The story is more complicated than that, in truth. My sister had abandoned it almost immediately after purchasing it, and I had used it at OFW 1.5 to put a few emulators and apps on. At some point she decided she wanted to play the Sims, and updated the firmware(!) to invalidate all the apps. Luckily, when my brother took it to school, I suppose one of his friends installed CFW on it, and there it sat until I picked it up. And now, it's got an emulator again.

    Any other apps people suggest?

To OP: Get PicoDrive, Snes9x, and CPS2 emulators. That's all I can say.
