EDIT: This thread is a merger between two different threads made on the same day. -DarkED

One commonly asked question is "Does Linux have an alternative application to Windows application X?" This is for the Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu system, but almost all can be used on most Linux distros. This is by far not a complete list, and there are larger ones on the internet which I can post / gather links for as well. If you know of more please don't hesitate to add them!

The table of equivalents / replacements / analogs of Windows software in Linux. (Official site of the table)

Those are just a few examples of alternative software you can use. There are many more examples, too many to list. Linux has at least one alternative application for every Windows application.

Cool theres a linux section. This will be popular.
The GIMP is inferior to Photoshop so its not a fair comparison.

Sorry, but that's far from accurate. The GIMP can do everything Photoshop can do, it just has a different interface. I've been using both for years and I've never found something Photoshop could do that the GIMP couldn't.

I cant live without Photoshop, so i dont spend alot of time in Ubuntu. Is CS2 able to be installed via Wine? If it is, does it run slower or faster or just the same. If i can get CS2 on my Ubuntu partition i dont think i will ever leave.
Also, i use Musikcube on my XP partition, which is a really simple media player/library. I love the program because its kinda a like iTunes, but without all of the useless shit. Is there a good media library program for linux. I've seen lots of media players, but no decent libraries/organizers that can see my ntfs drive. I heard of Songbird, but havent yet tried it. Any ideas?

You can install Photoshop CS2 in wine. You might be better off using VMware. I have CS2 installed on my laptop (1.7gh/z, 512mb DDR, 100gig) and it's as fast as it would be running XP Pro. Personally though GIMP with some brush/stroke packages and effect add-ons can do wonders. *BUT* Don't try CS3 though, that will just freeze 7.04 (Fiesty) with Wine v9.4.1. Also, there are several good itunes-type music players for ubuntu, browse through the add/remove section, even if you're running Kubuntu/Ubuntu/Xubuntu desktop they all integrate. For getting ubuntu to read/write to NTFS file-format you need to install a plugin. You can go to the #ubuntu channel via IRC. \

    Hope that helps

My Ubuntu partition can read/wire to ntfs, but a few of the music library programs i found didnt support that i guess. When i get my computer back together i'll install cs2 in wine. I have a 1.8ghz with 768mb ram, so i should be alright. Thanks for the help.
