For any of you who haven't already seen this:
YouTube - Beryl

This would be Beryl. If anyone is running...pretty much any distro of Linux, and would like help getting it setup just say so. I got it up and running this morning after much trial and error. Running correctly, this dwarfs Vista's Aero. It is just simply amazing to look @. I started playing with it...and before I knew it, I looked @ the clock and 10 hrs went by (HOLY CRAP). If you're running Linux...this is a must have.
I can help people running ATI more so than Nvidia...seeing as how I'm running an ATI card. Nvidia is supposedly MUCH easier to setup though.
For those of you who are running ATI, I HIGHLY recommend this site:
3D Desktop (Beryl and Xgl) on Ubuntu Edgy Eft with ATI card ~ Where I write my things and thoughts
-it is primarily aimed @ Ubuntu, but the instructions are somewhat universal if you know what to launch in-place of the apps used that are Ubuntu specific.
As I said...I had much trial and error with this....if anyone needs help, just let me know...I probably had the same problem :P

Beryl/Compiz is like Aero for Linux that existed before Aero and Vista came out.

in that case then im gonna try to get it. its looks are amazing! im still looking for an easy guide to install beryl. if someone has a link that would help me a lot. i have a nvidia video card
There is something like this for XP.
I remember seeing it way back when XP first came out, on the G4 channel. (but it was called something else then)
Beryl looks a lot nicer though, that's awesome.

Just FYI everybody - Beryl is old news. Compiz-Fusion is the way to go now (the Beryl/Compiz merger, just out of development.)

Dude, no offense, but that's inaccurate. I'm running Compiz-Fusion on a system with the following spec:
Celeron 1200mhz CPU
768mb RAM
Intel Extreme 2 integrated 64meg shared mem (it's about 5 years ago.)
It's a LAPTOP for Christ's sake!
That system gives me VERY reasonable performance on everything but pixelshader.
I'm also running it on THIS system with ALL the effects cranked up at 30-60fps:
Pentium 4 Northwood @ 3000mhz
512meg DDR400
BFGTech FX5200 256mb AGP
Those are both slow systems by today's standards and Compiz-Fusion is even more resource intensive than Beryl, and it runs perfectly fine on both systems.

ive been trying to get compiz-fusion and no luck. can i get a link for a good tutorial for this.
-_-
Fairly recent by linux standards, then. ( I admit it, caught red handed-I was making an assumption, as my AMD slows down to a crawl when other apps are run w/ beryl running.)
I can't get it to run on my core duo, but that's probably due to my 8MB Intergrated Gfx card, even though I have 1GB of ram.
I don't doubt that compiz-fusion runs smoothly on both of those rigs, but how does the Celeron handle when fusion and other applications are running at the same time? (i.e. Firefox, Konqueror, Abiword, etc)

This looks really cool. But im a windows user.
i got beryl on mine right now, doesnt lag much at all. specs are decent
AMD Athlon 64 3400+ 2.2GHz
512 DDR400 Ram
ATI Radeon 9000 128mb AGP
That 8MB card is EXACTLY why Beryl won't run for you. Beryl/Compiz is mostly CPU-independent, it only matters what videocard you have. The only operations handled by the CPU are the geometry processing for Wobbly Windows and a few calculations for various other effects - the videocard does all the heavy spadework. This is why my friend, who has a 733mhz Athlon and a 64MB GeForce4 Ti, can run Compiz/Beryl with a decent framerate. I'd say you need at least a DirectX-9 series card (FX52000/Radeon 9200 and higher) and about 32meg of VRAM minimum to run Compiz/Beryl.
Read above. The apps don't slow it down at all because my laptop has 768meg of RAM. In the Linux world, CPU is much less important than RAM. The system grinds to a halt if I run a 3D screensaver though, the videocard is already at it's processing limit in this laptop. On my desktop, I never have any slowdown. FX5200's aren't great but they are certainly better than anything Intel has to offer.
ohhhh yeaaa!!! got compiz-fusion and it was sooo easy to install. it took me 2 times cus i screwed up the first but its soo awesome! you got to try it chris and whoever else doesnt have it but has linux.

got damnit! i restarted my computer after i installed compiz-fusion and when it comes back on its gone! what did i do wrong. was i supposed to save something?
