I dunno... this IS in the Linux section, after all... if it was for everyone I'd assume it would go in the Tech section. I don't mind either way, it's up to everyone else

Anyways, here's my Ubuntu 7.04 desktop on my laptop running Compiz:

Debian 4.0, default Gnome UI. Eventually I'll probably end up using WindowMaker again, if it even still exists. This is the first time I've used Linux in a few years, and man, it's changed somewhat.

Yep, it was a crop of the Granville Bridge wallpaper. And yes, I also like Interfacelift

Oh, you're using Debian? You ain't seen nothin' yet as far as how much Linux has changed You should give a brand-new distro a try (Ubuntu, Fedora 7, etc.) I personally recommend Ubuntu for you since it's based on Debian.

On a sidenote, I thought the Vista users in the house might like this:

Also, if any of you are using Compiz or Beryl, you need to upgrade to the merged project, Compiz-Fusion. Details on how to do it on Ubuntu are here:

Compiz Fusion Mini-How-to. - Ubuntu Forums

    Enjoy!

Yeah, I started out on Redhat way back in the day. The college I went to had a UNIX network, ie. Solaris, SunOS, Ultrix I think... so when I came home and eventually got a computer, I had to give it a shot. This is actually the first time in probably more than 5 years that I've really run Linux.

I'll have to look into Ubuntu. I messed with Fedora a while back, and I just didn't care for it that much. Truth be told, I'd rather be running FreeBSD, the Ports tree is great.

You should try Gentoo, it uses a BSD Ports-style delivery system called Portage. It's kinda hard to install it and it takes hours because everything has to be compiled from source but the process is mostly automatic and the documentation is excellent.

Hehe, hairy installs are fun. I used to run a few headless Sun Sparc4's and 5's with NetBSD. Installed via netboot and over a serial terminal. Good times.
