im looking for my first mac notebook and im not sure what to look for. im interested in one of the g4 12" models, but i dont wanna spend more then $500 on it. all the comp really needs to do is surf the net wirelessly, play music, watch movies, view pictures, and chat.

i figure 512mb of ram will be good for now, not sure what the minimum processor speed should be, and i want the superdrive as well as the biggest HD i can find. am i going in the right direction or would you guys suggest something else? i have a 15" laptop right now, but its too large to be mobile, so i think the 12" macs will be right for me

15" is too big to be mobile??? oh yeah i forgot how small you are. yeah, well you know how even old macs can run OS X fine right? well, I think a G4, no matter what upgrades, will be able to do music, movies, of course pictures, and chat. Look at it this way, I have a crappy iMac (urineanus hates them) clocked at 400MHz with 640 MB of Ram and I can run 10.3 without much trouble. Based on that, I'd say a 600MHz with 512 would be great and probably cheap. I think I'm in almost the same boat as Julie guys (except for the fact that I already own macs). I just want a real basic notebook that will do a nice job with music, web, and movies.

Also, Julie, I wouldn't really worry about the wireless, you can pick up an ASUS WL-167G for like $25 new and it will work almost flawlessly. Probably cheapest reliable way of getting wireless on a mac. You should also go high with ram, especially on a mac because I think (and I could certainly be wrong here) that Mac OS likes a lot of memory, even more than windows? I will probably upgrade my notebook to about 1GB just to feel good when I get the money for one of these.

Yes any G4 would do those things flawlessly. My 800 mhz G3 works fine with all those xcpet teh goddamn video from sites. I dont knwo why thats teh case aith an ati 32 meg video card! any way. the cheapest wireless solution is what im using a belkin f5b7050 i got for 15$ off of ebay shipped. supports 54mbps wireless g and works flawlessly.

Thats a great laptop but I'm almost positive its gonna fetch over $500. Good Luck with it though! I usually just get things through buy-it-now if the offer is good.

That one will probably end at $650 or $700, maybe more. 1.25GB is a lot of Ram for an iBook G4 (i think that might be considered maxed out?) and the processor is pretty sweet too. Remember what your main interests for this mac is, cause you don't want to spend too much on a system you won't use to do much. That's always been a hard thing for me to do when shopping, but I'm getting much better at it.

That would be a smokin deal for under $500! It does not have a superdrive though...I know that was one of the things you were looking for.
