Hostel Review
Hostel is possibly the most disgusting, worthless, despicable and nauseating film to come out in the past 20 years and I loved ever moment of it. I remember the joy I felt watching it in the theater a few months back and I recently rekindled that love with the DVD release this past week (also available on worthless UMD disk).
Listen to me now and believe me later (SNL jokes aside). ELI ROTH IS GOING TO SAVE THE MODERN HORROR GENRE FROM ITSELF. Seriously. The modern horror movie suffers from one of two major problems. Either itâ₠¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s a retarded remake that usually features some teen sensation trying to break into the movie biz (House of Wax or The Hills Have Eyes for example) or theyââ‚ ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢re just plain idiotic (Boogeyman). Roth takes a fresh approach of casting relative unknowns and placing them in a well crafted story.
Understand that Hostel is not an easy movie to sit through. It is very uncomfortable and in many cases, disgusting. This is the point and Roth nails it. He set out to make a movie about torture and the limits of human cruelty and thatââ‚ ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s exactly what you get. By the time the movie is over, you will have seen brutal torture scenes and watch a normal person sink into the depth of depravity that the very people who torture him sink to. Itâ₠¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s a study on how far the human spirit can sink. Pretty damn low and yet very satisfying as well.
The basic plot works like this. Three college aged guys are backpacking around Europe looking to get laid and stoned. They hear about this town somewhere in the Eastern Block where the women are very loose and people can pretty much do anything they want. This becomes very true as the kids go missing one by one. Eventually a huge human torture ring is uncovered and the body parts fly.
The movie never once made me question the motivation of the characters. For example, arenâ₠¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢t pretty much all college kids trying to get stoned and laid? I also never questioned the logic of the characterââ‚ ¬â„¢s actions. It all made sense. This is the genius of Roth. He can take a ludicrous situation and present it as totally believable.
Of course, thereââ‚ƚ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s the gore. Quite simply, if you enjoy that kind of thing youââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢re going to be very happy. If you donââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t, then you wonââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t. Itââ‚ ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s effective and not over done.
If youââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢re new to Roth, make sure to check out his first film Cabin Fever. I personally though it was the best movie made the year it came out. Give it a look itââ‚ ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s brilliant. In the meantime, enjoy the work of the best new horror director to come out of the Hollywood grinder. His movies are smart, funny and I expect more great things to come.

Great review! Eli Roth is truly a master at his art. I heard in an interview that in the pre screening two people had to be taken away in an ambulance!

It's just going to be hard to find one that will be relased to your average American mega-plex anytime soon. Face it, the vomit gore movie is going straight to mail order video and about 50 people are actually going to watch it.
