modding the psp isnt illegal at all, emulation and roms are illegal if you dont own the game, he doesent really understand the legality of it, and playing downloaded isos are ilelgal as well

03-23-2007, 01:44 AM I was in a gamestop today and I was talking to a person that worked there about buying a used psp and I told him that i wanted to mod a PSP and I needed an older PSP one with like Firmware 2.71 or lower and he looked at me like I was crazy and told my to stop talking about the "Modification" of "Gaming Equipment". Then I asked why he said "because reverse engineering is illegal", then he asked that I leave the store before he calls security. I was dumbfounded, I can't believe that was illegal, at first I thought he was talking about how I was emulating a game (which I showed him Sonic 2 playing on DGEN). I told him I owned that game, which I do, but that isn't what he was talking about. I was having a normal conversation with him before that as well. I just want an outline of EXACTLY what is illegal about it; like how its legal to have a copy of the game only if you own the original game and other things like that.

03-23-2007, 03:06 AM It's legal to modify a physical product as it is no longer a license and you retain ownership. You need to own the games you are emulating. He doesn't know what you are talking about and was overreacting. Just don't talk about it as people are scared and don't understand. I don't blame the guy but he was overreacting way too much. Plus he lost a sale...
03-23-2007, 03:51 AM Rofl thats funny because i was at the Sony store with my mom and we were talking to this guy. Well lets just say she was like yea my son hacks his psp and can do alot of stuff with it it's amazzing. Yea and the guy just sorta ignored what my mom said.

security is gonna kick you out, lol, thats funny. mall security would laugh. not only that, but he just lost business. i would actually complain about the guy. tell the mgr that you were asking questions about the psp, and he went nuts, and started pushing you to admit you were lying. lol. get him in some shiz. hes a b*tch. lol.
and, tbh, modding isnt illegal. its looked down, on no one is gonna get arrested for downgrading a psp.
btw- alot of mods are out there for the DS as well, actually some pretty nice programs too. it just requires a bit more hardware.

03-23-2007, 07:23 PM Well, The reason why it's legal is because Dark_Alex provides his "converter" without any copyright code in it. He understands how to create the subsets and creates a program to combine them. What is illegal is what you do with it. Just like it's legal to copy your legally owned media its illegal to disburse it. Dark_Alex disburses his product with no violation, the end user is responsible for that. It's legal to "flash" your PSP as you retain ownership of the physical product and it's legal to download the publicly released updates. What is illegal however are the "Easy installers" for violating their distribution of copyrighted code of the generated DXAR file.
