Looks like a copycat killer was planning on hitting in county's around mine. Yesterday around 2:30 this e-mail was sent to everyone on our work floor:

Due to potential public safety concerns, DCSS employees who have children at schools in Yuba and Sutter Counties are allowed to leave work immediately to pickup their children. DCSS Employees will not be required to utilize leave or sick time. Please refer to the information below regarding this situation:

From the Sacramento Bee: This morning a SWAT team in Yuba City surrounded a house near a middle school where officials believe a suspect who had threatened a killing spree at area schools may be nearby, authorities said. Jeffery Thomas Carney, 28, is being sought and is possibly armed with automatic weapons and explosives, Sutter County Undersheriff J. Paul Parker said. Carney allegedly had threatened a spree of violence that he said would make Virginia Tech "look mild." Yuba City police officials said they are investigating a report that a vehicle similar to Carney's was seen in the area. "We are really hoping that we can catch up with this guy today," said Parker, who added Carney's parents are alarmed at the situation. Deputies have telephone recordings of messages Carney left Wednesday in which he claims to be armed with an "AK-47, improvised explosive devices and poison." "He said he wanted to do suicide by cop," said Parker, who added his department has had numerous previous contacts with Carney. "He has been in our jail many times in the past, most recently for domestic violence," Parker said.

Carney is described as 6-feet, 1-inch, 190 pounds with brown eyes and short brown hair. He is a transient, but his last known address was with family in North Yuba City. Carney is possibly driving a red mid-1990s Honda/Toyota-type sedan with a black hood. Sutter County authorities have notified neighboring law enforcement officials in Yuba County. Area school districts have been alerted and some schools have been locked down, Parker said. The Sutter County Office of Education reported that all 12 districts in the county are in high-alert mode. "We've advised them that there is a credible threat," said Linda Protine, assistant superintendent of schools for the county, which has 19,000 public school students. "All our districts are in lockdown or heightened security -- they have their own policies and terminology, but they are taking this very seriously." A principal at April Lane Elementary School in Yuba City, one of the Sutter County schools locked down this morning, told The Bee that many parents arrived to remove their children from class. "So many children have been 'checked out' of school by their parents that we went ahead and combined classrooms of the few remaining students," said Principal Angela Huerta, who said she hadn't tabulated the numbers yet. "Our staff is doing a great job," Huerta said. "They know the procedures and they're following them to the 'T.' The procedure is to lock the doors, close the blinds and keep the kids inside. The children don't leave the classroom unless they can be escorted by an adult." She said pupils at the 590-student school are not being told any details about the reason for the special precautions. Parents are allowed to take their children out of school if they choose, Deputy Superintendent Baldev Johal said. "Some parents are taking their children out, but we are encouraging them not to because they are safe," Johal said. "We have received no direct threat, but law enforcement has told us that they think they know of a man who wants to go on a killing spree. We are following the direction of law enforcement."

It turns out that the guy turned himself in 4 hours later. It is still not determined if he was serious or just looking for attention. Plus there was a 4 hour time difference from when this was sent out to when he turned himself in, so who knows what he could have done in that time.

Did anyone else have anything happen like this?

There was a robbery near my school last year, and the robbers shot someone, and then their fleeing car got into an accident a block away from my school. So, we went on lockdown because there were potentially 3 gunmen in my school, well, none of them came to my school, but, the school was completly surrounded by cops, they got all 3 people on a roof of a diner about a mile away.

when columbine happened... some kid at my high school next to me (i was in MS, the HS was across the 2 football feilds) got arrested because they found a list of 40 people, shotgun shells, and a black rose for his ex gf

and homecoming was cancelled because some stupid rumor was spread about this dorky kid that no one liked was going to kill everyone there, which was untrue, he was on vacation when we were supposed to have the homecoming celebration, so it was a rumor where the starter was suspended... when homecoming was rescheduled, the kid sat in a seperate section and read the whole time lol

Wow... nuts man! Somehow I knew there was gonna be at least one VTech copycat... every time something like VTech happens some nut has to go and do it again just to get the bigger kill count ... I hope the police manage to track em' all down before they do any serious damage or kill anyone.

Yea...there are always copycats it seems...just for attention. It is sad, but I guess some people want their time in the spotlight even if it costs them their life, and is negative time.

My school had like 10 bomb threats this year. They found a buttload of pipe bombs and guns in one of the kids rooms after his girl friend found out and ratted on him.
