    anything but a dell.
i would recommend looking in the paper for a small business
that will put a laptop together for you.
thats how i would go about it and the price should be cheep.

i quite like dell. good customer service (in UK)- a spring fell out my printer so it didnt print properly, phoned dell and they replaced it with a new one the next day. they sell laptops at affordable prices with good specs but the only problem is the amount of pre-installed software the laptop comes with. then again u can always uninstall it.

God I hate dell from previous experience. I got defective speakers with static and they refused to replace them. When I asked for help regarding ms word i was instructed to go in to ms dos mode, and what he told me locked up my computer. I yelled and he hanged up. And it wasn't the first time i asked for help and they gave me @#$%$#@ advice. I asked for reinstall windows help and they say call back next week, after a 50 min wait i was told to pay XXXX for help? I asked why and he says the customer help I wanted was of a higher level?

I find it puzzling why stores/companies/schools all have dell computer, probably a contract thing. But their services sucks. I think on resellerratings dot com they got like a 4 out of 10. I believed it was that site.

Though you may not realize it but lots of computers are ODM. Meaning Original Design Manufacture, a model made then marketed to dell, compaq which installs the ram, price, and other stuff under their name. For example I have an ABS Mayhem F-15 laptop that I bought from Newegg. In reality Newegg owns ABS. In reality my laptop is a triplet, the MSI Megabook M630 and an Avertec something are all three of the same computer under different names from different companies. Someone may say Screw so and so and get a so and so and it may be just the same computer with slight alterations.

Interseting huh? Dell does not make their own stuff, what you should say is stay away from the ODM company that dell works with.

I do not like what Acer does with their HD drive. They split them in to 3 ways. One as FAT32 and the other as NTFS and a third as a restore feature. I do not understand what this means but I find it very annoying. Had I know i would of bought something else cause theirs lots of the HD that appears tob e missing.

Look for a computer that has a restore dvd (I dunno how to reinstall w/o one) and good customer service. It would probably be Vista, so see if your printer and other peherials have vista drives avaliable for them. It's going to be a rude awakening for him when he realize his stuff may not be vista capable. Ram and HD isn't that big of a deal you can upgrade those easily by yourself just need to know the MAX amount supported.

Just go with the Specs and price worry about hte brand later.

No, it's called OEM - Original Equipment Manufacturer.

And yes, Dell / Compaq / HP / Gateway are all OEM's. Any computer that you didn't build yourself and bought from a company is an OEM.

Tell your dad to buy a Gateway laptop. My best friend has one with blazing specs and he paid just under $900 for it, and it's an excellent laptop, highly recommended and very tough and reliable.

The specs for that laptop were as follows:

AMD64 x2 (not sure which model) socket AM2
    1.5GB DDR2 RAM
    256mb ATi Xpress 200M
    4 USB2.0 ports
    15.4" 16:10 widescreen @ 1280x800

Nothing in Dell's price range will compete with that, especially with the customer service and overall reliability.

If your dad doesn't want a Gateway I also recommend an HP. They are more expensive but they're tough as nails.

Yea, dell makes good desktops, but if you want a laptop i would recommend a hp laptop. That should be good for a small bissiness. It runs microsoft. Unless hes looking for a mac, then I have no idea because I know no shit about macs.

Dude, it'll run whatever the hell he puts on it. And I dunno if anyone has noticed but Vista sucks for business use right now because of all the issues, and that's what will come on it most likely
