Hey guys. I'm not gonna be hanging here much, really busy summer. But I'm getting my new electric guitar soon and was wondering what software you guys liked for recording it. I'm not buying a mac, just got my Vaio last year(running xp). So any help would be appreciated!

Audacity is free, and alot of people like it. Audacity: Free Audio Editor and Recorder
Personally i use Cakewalk, but it costs alot. Cough*torrent*Cough
Is it your first electric guitar? What model is it?

yeah i have audacity. It is my first electric, i have a cheap acoustic. Its not a great electric, a Squier strat pack. I was planning on getting a epiphone lp kit for round $400, but the guy said for the price, the squier was just a good. so yeah. nothing amazing, but good enough for me.

I'd pop into a second hand book store that also sell software and see what you can find. I got cakewalk for 10 dollars.

However I dont recomend it, very complicated.

try this M-AUDIO - Session Software - The Make-Music-Now Software for PC

sweet. I have Cakewalk Pro 6. It is confusing, but very powerful. And dont listen to idiots who say you have to have a mac to record. I've reocorded and mixed a song with a ton of instruments in it without any problem on my pc.

you can buy an adaptor that goes from your guitar cable into the mic jack in your soundcard. Does your amp have a line-out? If it does, that would be better so you can have some tone control before the soundcard gets it. Then, of course, you would plug it into the line in of your soundcard.
    Look for something like this:

Your guitar cable goes in the side you cant see. I havent noticed alot of loss with that, you just have to tweak you eq settings and turn down the gain a bit.

headphone jacks are powered, but if you turn the volume down really low it should work.

It wont hurt it really, but its not good. You might lose the connection sometimes because the contact in the guitar is hitting the little separator instead of the metal parts. Go to a local Guitar Center, they sell good cables for like $5.
