Of course I'm sure the cracker scene is bound to find a way to re-engineer this out eventually, But hey! nice try microsoft!

"Good afternoon, as of this week, Microsoft has activated a function in Vista called 'Reduced Functionality.'", said an email sent from Microsoft to major Windows Vista distributers.

The email, titled " Pirated Vista -- A darkness descends!" continues to describe what Microsoft means by Reduced Functionality:
"This is a specific function in Vista that effectively disables nongenuine copies of Windows. Therefore anyone who has a pirated copy of Vista will experience:

A black screen after one hour of browsing
No start menu or task bar
    No desktop

Please communicate this antipiracy initiative from Microsoft to your resellers -- note this function has only just been activated in Vista worldwide and therefore any issues with nongenuine versions will start to arise from now onward."

The email also contained an advertisement directed to retailers. Titled "Don't let this happen to your customers", the advertisement states at some point that " The blocking of nongenuine product keys is an ongoing process, not a one-time event. To help protect honest partners and fight piracy, Microsoft will continue to block product keys that are determined to be pirated, stolen or otherwise deemed nongenuine."

Shoot, i should boot into my vista partition and see if it works. Then i can find a way around this.

    Edit:
I work just fine. I use Vista Lite though, so the guy who made it may have accidentally deleted that module. Go him.

    *sigh*
Stealing a physical cd is theft, copying a cd is copyright violation. Dont call them the same thing.
I think its cool that they check it. Who knows how many computer manufacturers use the same activation code on several computers just to save themselves a bit of cash.

well what you should do, is bring in a dvd, put it in one of the display models, stick windows vista on it and leave.. therefore the company really didnt lose anything of value..
but the true question is, why on earth would anyone want to steal vista? its the worst operating system ever.

Ever try deleting a program you no longer use?
    Prompt:
"Are you sure you want to uninstall this program?"
    YES
    Prompt:
"You must be signed in as an administrator to activate this function"
    log off-log in as admin
    Prompt:
"Are you sure you want to uninstall this program?"
    YES!
    Prompt
    "Windows needs permission to continue"
FUCK YOU, I WANT THE PROGRAM GONE!!!!!!!!!
(And then what they should have said)
"Well just in case you dont want this program removed, we are going to keep bits and pieces spread out through your computer, so your registry gets so screwed up you are going to have to manually delete parts of the files in every folder you can possibly imagine.. Thanks for supporting Microsoft!"

Na I wouldn't say vista is the worst OS of all time, now Win98 before SE was perhaps the worst ever made WinOS.

Let's also not forget WinME, that OS would crash on everything.. Gaming was almost impossible, but I did laugh my ass off to the poor saps who updated to ME.

Thats all from the program developers. They design the installer/uninstaller, so they choose what stays/goes during the uninstall process.

You can turn off the permission prompts. They arent a big deal though, you get asked the same questions running linux.

Vista isnt terrible. They could have done better, but its a decent operating system.
