Hey gang, I'm looking for some program to help secure my computer. Programs I've always heard of but have never seen. Thing like IP address falsifier, programs that hide personal usage info from web site seekers, some cool hacker sofware that registers my comp as coming out of New Zealand, then Tokyo, etc., other programs to deny access to web sites. I want privacy and to be more anonymous online. I'm paranoid about the 'internet' spying one me. I think Vista's full of that kind of software. Thankfully I'm still on XP. Any one have any tips? Program name I could look up? Willing to share? PM too if you'd like. I'm by no means a hacker, just a modder, so I have no idea where to start.

....Plus I'm paranoid about Googling this kid of thing. I can't help but imagine the FBI are a little sensitive to it. Lol. Thanks!

Most of what you are talking about (like being anonymous, your ip address showing you in some other country/continent) You are talking about a Proxy. a proxy server will let you connect through it, and browse the web. All data sent/recieved will go through the proxy server first before arriving to its destination.
There are thousands of free proxy servers available online, Many of them you can access through your web-browser such as: https://www.amgstealth.com/

And others, you will need to add the proxy servers IP address and Port number into your web browsers connection setup allowing you to connect to the proxy directly.

Well, thats mainly how to get anonymous while browsing the web. If you want to protect your computer from Malacious files (virus/trojan and the like)

here are some software firewalls to get you started.

ZoneAlarm and 3rd party ZA Guide (Generally applies to "Pro" version, but still useful for the free)
Kerio(update: Now owned by Sunbelt Software-info at forums)
Agnitum Outpost Pro Firewall(30 day trial) and Manual User Support Forum
    Outpost Free Firewall
    More Firewall help and info

    Anti Virus:

AVG - AVG Anti-Virus and Internet Security - Real-time protection against viruses, spyware and malicious websites
Avast - avast! antivirus - high security and protection from malware with anti-spyware and anti-rootkit software built in
AntiVir - Free antivirus - Avira AntiVir
Panda ActiveScan - ActiveScan 2.0 - A second opinion on the security of your PC

    Spyware Protection:
    Ad-Aware - Ad-Aware @ Lavasoft - The Original Anti-Spyware Company - Lavasoft
    Spybot: Search & Destroy - http://spybot.safer-networking.de/
    CWShredder - http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html
    Hijack This - http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html
    IE-SPYAD - http://www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/resource.htm#IESPYAD
    SpywareBlaster - Javacool Software
    SpywareGuard - http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html
    XCleaner - http://www.xblock.com/download-freeware.php

but in the end, the most protection you could ever have. is to be very cautious of what you download in the first place.

use firefox and look for the extensions Scriptblocker and adblocker

script blocker will block all scripts till you allow them
adblocker will block most ads in mst websites, like the adds here by google... I never see them

I have no antivirus on my computer, only a nice firewall. I didn't find any problems yet.

Comodo firewall and Firefox's billions of addons are all you need. Comodo is incredibly good and costs nothing, dont waste your time with stuff like Zone Alarm that have a free version with almost no features.
    Very funny....not.

Wow thanks guys so freakin' much! I've turned my firewall back on, added, Mozilla's adblock and NoScript, got my ad-aware working again and plan on trying a few programs from LuC1Fr's list as well as find a good proxy serer to go through! Thanks again gang!

Are there any other computer related programs out there that you really suggest and love?

well i have a pro version of Eset's Nod 32 A/V (The trial version only gets updates for 30 days) no firewall, and running some firefox addons. I've had no intrusions for the past 4 years. Then again, i don't go downloading random Applications off of LimeWire or BitTorrent sites.
