If they are getting a free education, then that should be their payment.

It's college for christ's sake, learn something, not demand money/receive money.

Nope. It takes potential scholarships away from people who put alot of time and effort into learning instead of playing sports. A college should put academics first and everything else second.
    Very funny....not.

thats what i think. i realized how much money goes towards sporting events but such events as debating events go hardly noticed.

    No.

Broski's don't deserve a free ride because they work out and tackle dudes. School isn't about sports so why go to free because of a sport?

I'd like to say no, but the reality is that most highly recruited athletes don't care about the education. Look at what happened after the NBA banned high-school graduated from entering the NBA Draft. Kevin Durant is a prime example of a wasted scholarship when he could have been just paid for his 1year at UT. Cedric Benson and Ricky Williams didn't get a scholarship because they got paid by their minor league baseball teams thus opening up the scholarship to someone else. I'd like to see it as a case by case deal, but that'll never happen because it'll end up ruining the image of the NCAA.

People like to watch football. Students go to schools with good football teams. The school invests in a good team in order to attract more students. Football is also a good extracurriculer and encourages school spirit and pride. Don't be mad at it just because you aren't good at football or soccer or hockey.

Some of you guys really think that they just flat out care more about sports and they really don't. I actually asked the principle of Pepperdine University and he said the he didn't like the fact that their basketball players can barely read and write but they need them.

Having skill in sports has nothing to with disagreeing with this. The fact of the matter is sport players get a free ride for a game. Football players should be thanked for their ability and entertainment, but they get way too many freebies and giveaways.

And whoever said they talked to a principal about sport players that they hate them, bullshit.. They get so much money for games and are supported so much, if the principal TRULY hated them instead of spending money to try to earn money, why not just use the money you are getting for new supplies or teachers etc..? Even if the school doesn't have a good football team people will still go there for the main reason they would be going to school, TO LEARN, when I'm in class and the teacher is like sorry for the lack of new books, our budget was cut. You know why? Stop spending tens of thousands of dollars setting up games, buying them jerseys, sending cheerleaders to Florida for competition.

I'm in school to fucking learn, and the sad thing is I don't see any of my parents tax money go to useful shit because our budget is for football players, cheerleaders, and useless shit for them.

I said it and it is true. I was in pepperdine for family weekend and he knew my sister so we got to talk to him for a little bit. Of course he didn't say this publicily, but he did say that to us in private. If you look at why schools need sports, then just look at either my or Sullivan's post.

    what 4 people voted "yes"?

I want to kill them. I personally would have voted "fuck no" too.

I mean, some of it'd be okay as a slight compensation, but full scholarships? fuck no.
