Before going into A Scanner Darkly, one should understand that Phillip K. Dick is one of the best Sci-Fi writers of his generation. Donâà ’¢â€šÃ €šÃ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â†šÂ¬Ã…¾Ã‚¢t believe me? Well, his little ditty ÃƒÆ’Ã†â€™Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â¢ÃƒÆ Ã‚Â¢ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã…Â¡Ãƒâ šÃ‚Â¬ÃƒÆ’Ã¢â‚¬Â¦ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â €šÂ¬Ã…“Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?âà ƒÆ’¢â€šà ƒâ€šÃ‚¬Ãƒâ€š? was adapted to one of the finest movies ever made, Blade Runner. Those who arenâà ƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã ‚¬Ã¢ââ⠚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t old enough to remember the Ridley Scott classic may remember another movie inspired by Dick (letâà ƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã ‚¬Ã¢ââ⠚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s just all agree to laugh it up and get the whole ÃƒÆ’Ã†â€™Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â¢ÃƒÆ Ã‚Â¢ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã…Â¡Ãƒâ šÃ‚Â¬ÃƒÆ’Ã¢â‚¬Â¦ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â €šÂ¬Ã…“DickÃƒÆ’à ‚Â¢ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â⠚¬Å¡Ã‚¬Ãâ €š? joke out of our system), the not as good but still impressive Minority Report. Keeping this in mind, this movie is barely science fiction. ItÃƒÆ’Ã†â€™Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â¢ÃƒÆ ’¢â€šÃ⠀šÃ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â†¬Å¾Ã‚¢s still worth your time though.

Those who follow Dickâà ƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã ‚¬Ã¢ââ⠚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s work know that he was quite a drug user and this story was written when he was at his worst. As such, there is very little along the lines of sci-fi (the story takes place a mere 7 years into the future). The basic plot is that Bob Arctor (Keanu Reeves) is an undercover narcotics agent sent to uncover the truth about where highly addictive narcotic called ÃƒÆ’Ã†â€™Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â¢ÃƒÆ Ã‚Â¢ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã…Â¡Ãƒâ šÃ‚Â¬ÃƒÆ’Ã¢â‚¬Â¦ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â €šÂ¬Ã…“Substance DÃƒÆ’Ã†â€™Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â¢ÃƒÆ Ã‚Â¢ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã…Â¡Ãƒâ šÃ‚Â¬ÃƒÆ’Ã¢â‚¬Å¡? is manufactured. As he becomes more and more addicted to the substance he is trying to keep off the streets, his mind begins to unravel and the line between reality and fantasy blurs. In a society where almost everything is recorded he is not only fighting his own sanity but his paranoia as well. The whole movie has a sense of dread to it that seems counterintuitive to how bright it seems on the screen. More on that later.

The supporting cast of Woody Harrelson and Robert Downey Jr. are actually pretty good. They are mainly in the movie for witty banter and it works most of the time. The problem is that the movie tries to be ALL witty banter and it can grow a bit tiresome. To be honest, I was fighting sleep the first half of the movie. It was a parade of discussions about nothing really. Seemingly endless discussions about how society is going downhill and blah, blah, blah. Imagine listening to your stoner friends talk about politics for 45 minutes and you have the jist. This isnâà ’¢â€šÃ €šÃ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â†šÂ¬Ã…¾Ã‚¢t a mistake though because everyone in the movie is addicted to something, and conversations about politics by stoners seemed pretty accurate.

So itÃƒÆ’Ã†â€™Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â¢ÃƒÆ ’¢â€šÃ⠀šÃ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â†¬Å¾Ã‚¢s impossible to talk about this movie without covering the look. The Screenwriter and Director Richard Linklater developed his technique for overlaying animation on top of film (rotoscoping I believe he calls it) for his movie ÃƒÆ’Ã†â€™Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â¢ÃƒÆ Ã‚Â¢ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã…Â¡Ãƒâ šÃ‚Â¬ÃƒÆ’Ã¢â‚¬Â¦ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â €šÂ¬Ã…“Waking Lifeâà ƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã ‚¬Ã‚?. It creates some pretty amazing visuals. What the audience is left with is the most lifelike animation theyâà ƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã ‚¬Ã¢ââ⠚¬Å¾Ã‚¢ve ever seen. It also allows the filmmaker to add in special effects without pulling the user out of the given format. I would say the movie is worth seeing simply for the visuals alone. The problem is that the movie has some very ominous overtones and is presented too brightly. Everything seems so clean and crisp when the world they inhabit is not. Part of me wants to say that rotoscoping was not the best way to shoot the film, yet it looks so cool itÃƒÆ’Ã†â€™Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â¢ÃƒÆ ’¢â€šÃ⠀šÃ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â†¬Å¾Ã‚¢s hard to speak against it.

In the end, the movie is a little dull but has a good storyline once it becomes clear whatâà ƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã ‚¬Ã¢ââ⠚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s happening (and that takes about half the movie). The visuals are amazing, yet misplaced given the context of the story. ItÃƒÆ’Ã†â€™Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â¢ÃƒÆ ’¢â€šÃ⠀šÃ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â†¬Å¾Ã‚¢s a flawed movie that IÃƒÆ’Ã†â€™Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â¢ÃƒÆ Ã‚Â¢ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã…Â¡Ãƒâ šÃ‚Â¬ÃƒÆ’Ã‚Â¢ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Å¾Ã‚¢m going to recommend simply because Phillip K Dick is a talented writer and his stories deserve your attention. A Scanner Darkly isnâà ’¢â€šÃ €šÃ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â†šÂ¬Ã…¾Ã‚¢t one of his best stories, but if youâà ’¢â€šÃ €šÃ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â†šÂ¬Ã…¾Ã‚¢re not expecting Blade Runner youâà ’¢â€šÃ €šÃ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â†šÂ¬Ã…¾Ã‚¢ll be allright.
Oh people, know that you have committed great sins. If you had not committed great sins, God would not have sent a punishment like me upon you.

LOL, i read your review cause i was wondering if the movie was just a peice of crap not worthy of seeing. IDK what makes me feel like this, but I can't get past the art style. I actually don't like it. It makes me feel weird and uncomfortable. I can tell that if i saw this movie all i would be able to focus on is the art style. But if you can get through the commercials of this movie then based on what mofo said you should go see this movie.
Hope you had a nice XMas! Help me modding my original Xbox. See my thread in Anything Goes Here forum

That art style is awesome, it makes up the boredom for the first part of the movie. Also Keanu Reeves makes any movie worth seeing (except the lake house)
