Finally, somebody else who is a fan of both Nix and Colfer
Unfortunately, the most recent artemis fowl book falls short of the first two, and Nix needs to write more about the old kingdom. Three books and a short story are not enough.
Regarding recent reads, the His Dark Materials series hit all the right points EXCEPT for the fact that the american editions of The Golden Compass (Northern Lights) and The Amber Spyglass are censored. It's hard to put into words how much the censoring and banning of books rubs me the wrong way.

I don't read very much, but battle royale sounds pretty cool. I think I'll read it.

I have been reading a lot of Neil Gaiman and Albert Einstein's thesis he gave as of lately. As well, I am in the middle of The Templar Legacy by Steve Barry. I am waiting for my Kindle to come in, and my hardcore reading will hence begin yet again.

Skymall ftw...
EDIT: But, seriously the only book series that I was ever into was someting called The Belgariad and The Malloreon. There are five books in each series, and I used to have all five titles from The Belgariad. I read the first three books, but then all five of them mysteriously disappeared before I had a chance to finish the last two.
... A shiny penny to the person who can find me the ebooks.

All the Pretty Horses wasn't too bad. I like McCarthy's style, so it was neat, but I liked Blood Meridian much more.
Invisible Man was boring. I read a lot of African American struggle books in school, and to be honest..I can get a little tired of the same book over and over again.
It was neat cause it had a lot of symbolism in it, and such, but I didn't like it too much.
Slaughterhouse Five, was amazing. This was just awesome. I've added a lot of Vonnegut to my list.
And I got to read White Noise on my own time too. That was also...just awesome. I loved it. | Hey, good to see you liked McCarthy. IMO, The Crossing is his best novel by far. It might not seem so after the first reading, but critically it places his novels on a philosophical plane that is incredible. In my opinion, it is the novel that has furthered the philosophical status of the American Western. While Blood Meridian is a realistic masterpiece, (in that it is a critique of America, and is on a realistic plane), The Crossing is a philosophical Magnum Opus.
I'm also happy to hear that you liked Don Delillo's White Noise, as it is also up there in my favorite books of all time.
You might want to check out Wallace Stegner's works (especially Big Rock Candy Mountain, Angle of Repose, and Wolf Willow).
McMurtry's The Last Picture Show is a very good contemporary look at a western.
If you want to head into the more philosophical texts, I suggest Emerson's Self-Reliance. As well, Barthes' Mythologies is a very interesting philosophical book. It has taught me to view objects differently--and helps with literary criticism.
