PS3 tuning into digital TV?
Sony has revealed that it hopes to give the console TiVo-esque PVR functionality in 2008.

Unlike other consoles, the PlayStation 3 is "future-proofed," Sony New Zealand executive Warwick Light has boasted to The Press.

Sony Computer Entertainment New Zealand's head of marketing told the newspaper that the company had many different plans to make sure that the machine lasted well into the next generation.

Light made digs at both Nintendo and Microsoft, saying of the former that it had freely admitted the Wii was not a next-generation machine, and of the latter that, "look at the tangible differences between processing power and scope for scalability between the PS3 and the Xbox 360, it is clear that the PS3 is designed to last until the next generation...DVD is current generation. Why would you support current generation?"

The executive also revealed that Sony aims to turn the PS3 into a personal video recorder. "We're also hoping next year--about the same time that Freeview launches its terrestrial broadcasting service [in New Zealand, expected to be in March]--to release a digital tuner for the PS3, turning it into a programmable TV recorder," said Light. He did not say if the functionality would come via a hardware add-on or update to the PS3's firmware.

Freeview is a digital terrestrial television provider based in the UK, which allows owners of a set-top box connected to their TV or a Freeview-enabled television to access a variety of extra channels and digital radio stations for no monthly fee.

A PS3 with PVR functionality would mark Sony's second attempt to give a console TiVo-esque functions. In 2004, the company released a PVR-equipped version of the PlayStation 2, the PSX, in Japan to dismal sales. It was discontinued in early 2005.

Though Nintendo has repeatedly said the Wii won't have any nongame video playback functionality, Microsoft is already competing against Sony in the sector. Currently, Xbox Live Marketplace offers a variety of TV shows for purchase and films for rent, and will purportedly be getting IPTV functionality in the future.

I think it is very much worth the price....Blu ray players are up to 800-1000 US dollars..PS3 plays blu ray...and the features will keep on coming like this tivo like feature

eactly...and im getting a new stand for my TV which will have enough room for a PS3, WII, and my 360 ....so i pretty much have to get them

The blu ray playes are a joke. the format wars are nearly gone now and the digital age is taking over. It be a waste to invest in technology thats going to end up like the beta tapes.

PS3 is basically a computer. I think its well worth the $500. Add all the shit you have to a 360 and they're same price, or xBox comes out more expensive.

yup thats why im getting a ps3 for blue ray mostly then games because a blue ray dvd cost more or same then the ps3. And with this im for sure getting it

Well Bluray seems to be the winner of the format war as some major retail outlets like Blockbuster have completely disbanded there copies of HD-DVDs in favor of Bluray. And the porn argument seems to be also null as I've read some adult film companies have adapted and are using Bluray discs, now if Sony approved of this I have no idea, but I remember them saying they were against the idea.

Thats great news that the PS3 may have DVR like capabilities, it truly is a multifunctional machine. As a side note you can use your PS3 as a PVR even now through Linux.

It is but all of the sony fans are saying it's going to win..

My video stores near me don't even have blu-ray for rent/buy because no one really has blu-ray except if you own A PS3. And at my game store they still have all the launch PS3's in stock.

Blu-ray is cool and all, but will be like beta max.

edit: yes I have a 360, but not a fanboy, I hate the xbox 360, I'm on my 7th one, it's a junker, but I don't have enough money to shell out another $500 on a system that I will be trading in for $60 bucks when a new console comes out.

but that PVR on the ps3 is really cool.

dude 5 years from now the only system playable will be 360 due to its XBLA games and backwards compatability also some games might be still alive by then .But the point is 5 years from now youll regret spending all this monay on gaming systems trust me ive tried to collect but in the end wasted space(especially PS3 its still a fax machine.At least two is enough but all three.

actually in 5 years there will be a PLAYSTATION 5 or 6. 360 has a lot of content going for them, not to mention they have that Disney thing going on too.

Oh yea I forgot disney had teamed up with microsoft(probably cause the only disney movies I watch are with pixar on thier side).Well once again 360 reigns above PS3 with its Xbox live marketplace features.

Ummm...
Playstation Family, and years since a new PS came out
PS1- 6 years, discontinued in 2005 (11 years)
PS2- 6 years, outselling all Next-Gen System (7 years so far...)

I really think with everything put into the PS3, it will take another 7+ years for an update. Playstation Network- Free (Unless you buy games). Xbox Live- $50+ a year. PS3- Low failure rate. Xbox 360- Rather unacceptable failure rate (I was going to get one, both of my friend's broke.)
Price:
60gb PS3- $499
Xbox 360 Premium- $479 (Plus HD, WiFi adapter, ect...= $600)

I do own a PS3, but the reasons were less worries, and less stuff I had to buy afterwords. I would buy an Xbox 360 if there wern't that many problems.

thats what i said and i deeply regret ever getting a 360 as i'm up to my third console and i know wont stop there as the new revised consoles are not coming out until christmas. i feel like i shoulda waited and not got the 360 last summer and waited for the ps3 6 months later. i wish i could trade because the only game i like that is not on the ps3 is Forza and I know Gran Turismo is probably gonna be its equal although i've never played it. damn this sux

theres no guarantee sony wont try to charge people for their online services in the future.. its all speculation right now
