For people who have the PS3 I might get one for Christmas so clue me in on a few things.

Can I play .avi/.mpg etc. files, or do they need to be .mp4?

Can you transfer movies any other way besides memory card reader?

[if you installed it] How does Linux run? How easy is it to install?

How is the online?

And finally what games do you suggest? [no rpg's]

edit: oh yeah, you think it's worth it as well?

1. im pretty sure they have to be mp4

2. if u just happen to have a long enough usb cable u could plug it into ur computer.

3. dont got linux on mine

4. Online as in web browser or games? if games theres alot more support for online games than ps2.

5. as games go, i love Warhawk (it comes with a bluetooth headset =D, its online only), and Resistance Fall Of Man. i only own 4 games. the otehr 2 are Elder Scrolls 4 and Armored Core 4.

on the Playstation Store they have alot of demos u could try out.

6. i think it was worth it...even thought price dropped 2 days after i got mine.

If you install linux you can play any kind of video you want, you'll just have to boot into linux first.

1. Not sure, the only thing I watch on the ps3 are trailers and other things I download from the PSN or Blu-Ray movies.

2. You can connect an external hard drive or any USB storage device. You can also set up a file server to access media from your computer's hard drive if you have a network setup at your house.

3. No linux yet, I might if I replace the 60Gb hdd with a much larger (250Gb or so).

4. The online gaming I have experienced is pretty good. Larger player size (40 player games in Resistance) with very little noticeable lag. Most games mini games you can purchase on the PSN let you compare scores/stats with the top rated people and the people in your friends list. The web browser is ok if you have a keyboard connected to the ps3 but if you have a pc near by I don't really see why you would browse the web on any console.

5. Resistance is a great game. Heavenly Sword is amazing but also amazingly short. You could rent it and beat it in like 15 hours. Its definely worth playing all the way through though. I've played a few other games and nothing is really a must have although Ratchet and Clank's demo is awesome and it comes out tomorrow. Eye of Judgement looks very cool, but only if you are into trading card games. Some other games coming soon that look very promising are Haze, Killzone 2, UT3, and MGS4. Most of the other really nice looking titles are multi platform but if you don't own a 360 there are a bunch of multiplatfrom games I'd recommend.

6. I got mine a few weeks after launch and I have had a lot of fun with it. With the games currently out, you can definitely find a few games you'd really enjoy and a lot of games are on the horizon that look promising. I'd recommend the ps3 if its in your budget.

Well I was planning on getting the 80gig w/ motorstorm for $499.99 for Christmas..

I do own a 360 and a Wii, so if there are any good exlusives, besides Kill Zone 2, no rpg's, you should list them

The only thing I don't like is that it needs to be .mp4, but xbox/wii can't even play videos off the harddrive so it doesn't bother me, better then burning a dvd.

I do think I'm going to get it, you guys made it seem worth it.. Plus I don't have any other ideas.

Drizzle, you think you could help me set it up so I can access it through my network? When I do get it, that is..

And if anyone else has installed linux, tell me how it is ^_^.

you can stream video files from your pc to your ps3 with nero 7 ultra

as for linix its not hard to do but its pretty time consuming and as for having any reason for it there is none at the moment i did it in hopes of using it for emulators but as of right now none work

as for games if yo ulike tactical shoters graw2 is really good moter storm is a grate racing game again it all depends on what you like

as for online its not to bad it needs work but being able to play for free always makes me happy

Some other good exclusive games out or coming out before the end of the year are Lair (maybe better as a rental though), Haze, Motor Storm, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, and Warhawk.

I got it today guys, the 80 gig w/ motorstorm package..

It's cool as hell, the controller feels weird though, really light.

But it's really amazing, the graphics are really good ( I don't have HDTV ) and can't wait till Christmas until I can use it again :P

Hey im getting a ps3 for christmas too, you guys make it sound so cool. At first its online play didnt seem up to scratch like the 360's. Burnout Paradise looks good. Anyone seen the trailers?

Usually I do as well..

But I did that last year with my Wii, and let's just say that I was pro in Wii sports the day I opened it
