PS2 modchip recommendations
So I finally got around to getting a PS2 - Ebayed one w/ 2 controllers, 2 memory cards, cables, stand, and even the manual for $30...Only problem is that I've to to realign the disk drive, other than that it's mint - not even a scratch.
I need a modchip, as I'd like to put a harddrive in it without going through the trouble of tracking down the network/hdd kit (I plan on soldering the IDE cable directly to the motherboard and using an external power supply for it). It's an SCPH-39001 system, so version 7 motherboard.
Googling gives about a dozen suppliers with prices running from $10-50 for what I need...Some of these have got to be scams, but I'd rather ask here than find out the hard way. If anyone's got a good, cheap supplier, speak up.

well, if you want to play games that are backed up on DVD-R then use, Swap Magic 3, i can sell it to you for $25, because i dont have a ps2 anymore (ps3 baby!) also when using SM3 you dont need a mod chip, it will trick the ps2 and load the ps2 disc...so yea |

research the DSM4 lite, its probably the best one out there if you can find them, they are hard to keep in stock

I checked out the different swap disks, but none of them impressed me all that much - The problem they all share is that they're physical disks that can and will get scratched up and/or lost over time...That, and I don't really trust my 9 year old little sister with a slide card or flip top when I'm not around.
I ended up ordering 3 Modbo 1.1's from foundmy dot com. They had a buy 2 get one deal going at $10 each, so I've got one for me, one for my buddy, and one for ebay (if they don't delist it). The chip has some serious limitations (no flashing, try to use the config menu and the chip fries itself), but with it being 2008 and all I'm pretty limited as to my options for doing this on the cheap.

mod chips are awesome. i cannot say which version i have but its the best 75 dollars i ever spent. i do not regret it one bit. there is a place right next to me called " Game eXchange " that does the stuff.
NOTE: mod chips are NOT illegal, though more then half the time they are used for illegal purposes

Yeah, My sisters gonna let me put a Flip Top on hers, and Im gonna get SM3 (or the Latest when I finaly Buy It)
The thing is, SM Is only like $23, Some of our games are like $80+ (Collecters and Such)
So, EVEN IF the SM disk gets fucked, Its cheaper than If the Original Disks get fucked |

Not interested in the swap magic discs... I already have the chips on the way, and would would rather not have to rely on a disc anyway. And as for sony's special lasers - Commercially, discs are pressed rather than burned...The problem is that (like most game discs) the blank discs and burners we can get ahold of as consumers are incapable of burning to the physical location on the disc where the signing code is located.

Chips are in...They ran out of Modbo's, though, so I ended up getting 2 modbo 1.1's and a Duo 3 Ultra. I'd like to use the duo in mine, but after a bit of forum surfing have found that it's a bit of a bitch to install...Is there any particular problem with the Duo 3, or are the problems mainly just people bridging solder pads? Is wire length (timing issues) especially criticalfor this chip, IE moreso than for a modbo or any other for that matter?
