PS3 Modding
I do not own a PS3 but a friend of mine does and was asking about hacks and exploits that can be done for the PS3 (like saving his games to a hard drive and things like that)
is this possible yet for the PS3?
if so.. how is it done? |

ISOs, no, but homebrew YES! You just need a USB flash drive, and basic knowledge and no stupidity. Oh, and this site: QuickJump Downloads-PlayStation-3 -

Disc images... Hmm... You can use (need) discs to install Fedora Core 5 Linux, play various games, music, and movies, but as for transfering all the data from the said disc to your HDD; idk.

As far as I know the current status on playing back-ups is that they have been able to get warhawk to run(I am not sure how well though). But Warhawk is the only thing they have gotten to run.

i really dont see the need for ps3 modding, sure it would be great to save it to the hard drive, but most games are 10gb+, and most people dont have hdd bigger than 80gb, because they are scared they might mess it up, i have a 40gb, not shame to say it, but whats the point of modding? its not like the psp where we can play all types of games...i dont see a point in emulators because you either have a psp or pc, i dont see a point in ISOs, because if you really want to play the game you would rent, buy, borrow it, not save or even download as that could take a WHILE...so if you want to mod the ps3, figure out how to mod the 2.42 and implant trophy support, different regions for the ps3, in-game music..stuff like that, dont worry about games, because the good ones are worth the three hamiltons |

I haven't got my Ps3 yet, but I'm thinking about picking up the 80gb bummer i can't find any special 80gb with BC but hey whats the big deal... I'll just pick up a cheap $100 PS2... as for my list of mods for my PS3... all i have is the hard drive mod... swap out that 80gb for a 160gb or 200gb cheap hard dives are the latest crave i hear all over the place, they even tell you how to do it in the newest Gamepro mag... the Ps3 is so much easier to do then the 360... I'm not even sure if they have figured out how to swap out those small hard drives on them yet...
Anywho I have a Question... the 80gb PS3 that im gonna get for $300 has no card readers only two USB... so could i pick up a USB card reader and would that work on the PS3?
Or...
if this bad boy ever gets made...
st0rmbr1nger has announced news of his new PS3 USB port/card reader plate concept. st0rmbr1nger has announced news of his new PS3 USB port/card reader plate concept. He states that the lack of card slots on the PS3 is a real problem, this coupled with a shortage of USB ports means that some new product development is needed! So whats the big idea? A plate which connects to one of the existing USB ports using a slimline USB header with ribbon down the plate.
A multitude of ports, and a MS and SD card reader slot are also supplied bringing this bang up to date! At the back of the plate there are more ports for those always connected, but want to be hidden devices. He also suggests a deluxe version which could be made out of aluminum, therefore providing an extra heatsink for the PS3.
To quote: Don't think anyone has done anything like this. The lack of card slots on the PS3 is a killer, all the current card readers are clumsy and look messy, the shortage of USB ports is also a problem (USB can support upto 256 ports per controller..)

i've had my ps3 for almost a year now and i've only used 2 usb ports at the same time, and that was because i was charging a controller while transferring a movie via usb drive. I could have freed up the first usb port by plugging my controller into my computer to charge too. If you really think you will need 4 usb ports then go buy the adapter, but i dont really see a use for it personally.
I love swapping HDD's on PS3's. I love it because im not stuck buying an overpriced proprietary drive like the 360. I feel like im sticking it to MS everytime i upgrade something on my ps3 and i get to shop around for a good deal. Idk why, i just get all smug.

I've had the PS3 60GB for quite some time and have made use of all but the CF port. Backwards compatibility is a huge feature in my book well worth the extra getting it. As for backing up ISOs, don't bother as they would be quite large. Installing Linux on the beast... that's easy to do, you can install Ubuntu, Yellow Dog, or Fedora (I won't mention SuSE due to Novell's agreement with Microsoft). However, when it comes to homebrew apps on the PS3 in Linux: "If one wishes to use the RSX in Linux then it is recommended that one does not upgrade one's firmware to 2.10 or higher."
ttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_for_PlayStation_3
(I'd post the link, but I don't have 15 posts yet...) |

Im not sure why sony blocked off the RSX. A cell-based distro with full RSX access would be a beast.

The PS3 has the potential to become the next emulation powerhouse since the Xbox. |
