you can already install linux on a ps3, but if your good enough you could write some code for the nvidia graphips card and translate x86 architecture into ppc architecture, then you could play just about every pc game that comes out , and play it on the ps3. Thats one good thing about linux, its open source so you can create your own shit if you want to.

no u cant hack it to run game ISO's.
you can install Linux on PS3 and get SNES/NES emulators for Linux and run them.
EDIT: the coo2est, u cant run PC games because there is no way to access the RSX shit which allows to run 3D Graphics and what not. |

linuix is optional and i think it was semi intentional.the main purpose behind the ps3 is to be the ultimate system for everything, not just ps3 games.now in the newer firmwares it almost supports every disc and movie/audio format etc out there, plus you can run linuix.unfortunately they cant do windows for obvious reasons, but its still nice. |

Wow, I knew the day would come were sony starts sabotaging (or at least make there PS3 better then other consoles the illegal way, if u know what i mean) there competition. Always thought the PS3 was the best console anyway. |

Neither installing Linux nor swapping the harddrive will void the warranty. I can't say you're encouraged by Sony to do either, but you're not discouraged or threatened with anything if you do. Also the great thing about the PS3 is that [for now], games are not region-encoded, meaning you can play a game from Japan, for example, on a US PS3 without any mods or hacks.

Gens/SNES game are so cheap you might as well buy them then download them for emu on the go. It was unintentional to open up emus on the ps3. Linux is not a ps3 hack, its a option called secondOS which you can install linux/unix/freebsd or really any open-source software. don't post things up when you don't know what your are talking about, you look incompetent.

You can rip your own cart to a rom, but if you download someone elses copy it's still illegal. |

The only different thing is possibly the serial number on each cart, but since you're only downloading the software from the cart online, which are identical per cart, it's legal.

To install Yellow dog linux, just download this and burn the iso onto a dvd. And stick it into your ps3 and go and "Install other OS". I havn't done it yet but im sure it will work. I havn't really read anything about it though. Yellow Dog Linux Download - Softpedia |
