you can use the older rom cartridges to run hombebrew and backups, very similar to the cfw on psp's. i use the dstt (runs on lite and phat), but other prefer the m3 and r4 style cards. evo works great as well. check out dealxtreme.com and just make sure you order the right card for you. dstt is cheap and easy though. use an micro sd card to load everything onto.

i dont think there is cfw. there is only the option of playing games you put on roms

I don't know if its called CFW or not, but you can run ROMS, Homebrew, etc. using a flashcart, so its basically the same function.

You can use a file explorer called moonshell, like the file browser on your phone. You dont change the firmware on the DS, the (for example) firmware is loaded on to the DSTT cart and updated by downloading the latest one. Its currently 1.17. Thats the joy of the DS, no fannying around with c/fw and bricking. But you are stuck with playing crappy snes looking games.

But yeah but toptoy/r4/m3 + a ezFlash's 3-in-1 (get a ez4 lite deluxe if you can find it though same thing but with a sd slot no rumble though iirc) with slot 2 don't have to send from nds sd to the gba on board flash) is best you can really get with ds
