My bluetooth's been playing up for a while now, dropping connection with headset, controllers and the BD remote so i decided to strip the PS3 and have a look mainly so i could see how easy it would be to replace. Anyway i've ordered one off flebay but was wondering if anyone had similar problems and if a new board solved it or if it's firmware issues?

never heard or those issues, but it's possible it could be the boards...these things are fairly strong and don't mess up like that...slim or phat model??

I'm guessing older PS3's would have issues even with the Sony brand, largely because support for Bluetooth devices other than the PS3 Sixaxis/DualShock 3 was gained back in FW update 2.5. I wouldn't know of a way to go about fixing it, I'd suggest getting either a USB one or getting a different non-Sony.
